I like Nolan's films, for a simple reason, they depict me.
In the movie Inception, Leonardo was on a mission to undermine one big corporation. How? by letting the grandson not inheriting his grandfather's control. How to do it? let him to have a dream, in which he was alone with his dying grandfather on the hospital bed, when his grandfather let him open the safebox besides the bed, in which lies a paperplane, not a will (繼承公司的遺囑). Whole groups of people, killing each other, just for this? Yeah, this is meant to be hard.
In movie The Prestige, when Borden kills Angier at last, there was a conversation,
<excerption>
Robert Angier: I've - I've made sacrifices.
Alfred Borden: It takes nothing to steal another man's work. You went halfway around the world. You spent a fortune. You did terrible things... really terrible things, Robert. And all for nothing.
Robert Angier: For nothing?
Alfred Borden: Yeah.
Robert Angier: You never understood... why we did this? The audience knows the truth - the world is simple... and miserable... solid all the way through. But if you could fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder. And then you... then you got to see something very special. You really don't know? It was... it was the look on their faces.
This is the greatest 互文 I've ever seen. Angier did and said something that Borden never acknowledged, but deeply believed. I would like my life to be any of theirs.
My father never said this, and will never say anything like this. But having this frame in my head means a lot. I am finally convicted that he supports me, under any circumstances.
When I woke up, I would like to say "Thank you!" to my father.
