General description on my work
This visualization project mainly describes the countries that entered the top 10 gold medal table in each Olympic Games since the first modern Olympic Games.Through the dynamic changes of the bar chart, we can more visually see the specific rankings of each session and the changes and trends that occurred this year compared with last year.
Combined with dynamic histograms and rectangular tree map, we can see that from the 1st Athens Olympic Games (1896) to the 31st Brazil Olympic Games (2016), the United States has entered the lists of top 3 gold medal table as many as 30 times.Moreover, the United States even won 78 gold medals in st. Louis Olympic Games (1904).
Duringthe Cold war, which was between the 15th Helsinki Olympic Games (1952) and the24th Olympic Games (1988), the United States and the Soviet Union were the twostrongest contenders for the No.1 in the gold medal table.
After the Cold war, at the 25th Barcelona Olympic Games (1992), China entered the top 10 gold medal table for the first time and ranked fourth with 16 gold medals.China continued to hold 4th place with the same number of gold medals at the 26th Atlanta Olympic Games. Starting off at the 27th Sydney Olympic Games,China's ranking rose year by year, and reached a peak at the 29th Beijing Olympic Games(2008) with 51 gold medals. It was the first time that China ranked No.1 in the gold medal table. In the following two sessions, China's ranking dropped year by year and ranked No.3 in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
A list of outcomes
In general, from the perspective of the gold medal table of the Olympic Games, the United States has a strong sports strength. China's performance in recent Olympic Games is dazzling, but there are also fluctuations. In addition, from the perspective of the distribution of gold medals, it can be concluded that many countries are becoming more and more competitive in the competition for gold medals, and their performance in the sports arena is even more dazzling.
Description of the technical aspects of my project
The selection of the Olympic Medals Lists as a data sample is due to the fact that it is now the occasion of a world sporting event such as the World Cup and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games is coming soon.
The use of Excel tabulation and Premiere editing mainly because that dynamic graph can let the audience see the specific rankings of each session and the changes and trends that occurred this year compared with last year in a more visually way.
Thisproject is completed in the following steps:
Firstly,all the medal lists were downloaded from the Internet and then imported intoExcel to screen, sort and translate into English. Secondly, each country was then given a representative color and made into a chart. Finally, saved thecharts of each session as pictures and imported them into Premiere.
Challenges
Therectangular tree map is mainly completed by Excel, and the weight difference ishighlighted by adjusting font size. There are two main challenges in thisprocess: one is to avoid the repetition of national colors, and the other is toadjust the format.
