What are some psychological facts that people don't know?
Everyone feels pretty much the same way
Sit back, relax.
Close your eyes. Listen to my words:
You have a great need for other people to like and? admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a? great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your? advantage.
While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally? able to compensate for them. Your sexual adjustment has presented? problems for you. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to? be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to? whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing.
You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become? dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride? yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others’ statements? without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in? revealing yourself to others.
At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other? times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend? to be pretty unrealistic. Security is one of your major goals in life.
Does this describe you?? Does it strike uncomfortably close to home?
If you say no, are you telling the truth?? Because over 85% of the? people who hear this, say it applies to them. That just isn’t Americans,? that’s worldwide.
The Forer Effect
What you read above is know as theForer Effector otherwise known as the generic horoscope.? This description was? given in 1948, psychologist Bertram R. Forer to his students telling? them it was crafted individually to them.? He found that on a scale of 0? to 5, the students gave of an average rating of 4.26 as to the? applicability of the statement to their own personality.? In reality, he? gave each one the same statement.
Now a lot has been made of this study as the tendency for people to? fall for hoaxes. The Forer Effect is also known as the Barnum Effect,? named after the entertainer and hoaxer P.T. Barnum.
The Human Condition
I see this in a different light .? If you actually readForer’s studyof the test.? You will see an interesting statement:
…an individual is a unique configuration of characteristics each of which can be found in everyone, but in varying degrees…”
We are so much alike in our dreams, hopes, and thoughts yet we think that it is only us going through the struggles of life.
Now I am not going to get all meta-physical on you.? My whole point? here is that we all feel the same desires for self-fulfillment.? We all? want to be accepted, yet step outside of what may be called normal in? your world.? Sometimes you feel like breaking loose and other times you? don’t.
Everyone has doubts.? My old teammates in Special Forces while highly? successful often doubted themselves and felt insecure at times.? The? professional sports stars and billionaire business people all are? critical of themselves and doubt whether they made the right decision.
These feelings are normal.? It is the human condition.
The trick is to understand this and build upon it.? Don’t let your doubts stop you.? Keep driving on. Never quit.
It’s okay to not be satisfied at your present level and seek? something new and different.? Everyone wants to make a mark on the world? and leave a lasting legacy.? Most everyone else is feeling the same? way.
The problem occurs when you stifle these feelings and/or think of? yourself as abnormal.? That’s when real frustration and other more? serious things occur.
It’s not important to get it perfect.? The important thing is to get it started.
