本書作者E.B.White，共寫過三部童話：《小老鼠斯圖爾特》（Stuart Little)（1945）、《夏洛蒂的網(wǎng)》(Charlotte's Web)（1952）、《天鵝的喇叭》(The Trumpet of The Swan)（1970），在美國《出版周刊》1976年進行的讀者調(diào)查中，《夏洛蒂的網(wǎng)》位居“美國十佳兒童文學(xué)名著”的首位，曾經(jīng)有小讀者問他的故事是否是真實的，他說：No，they're imaginary tales…but?real life is only one kind of life, there is also life of imagination.
故事開始于8歲的小女孩Fern從父親Mr.Arable手中救下一只發(fā)育不良的小豬，并且給他取名為Wilbur，像照顧小孩子一樣的照顧它，用奶瓶給它喂奶，應(yīng)小推車帶它出去玩，每天放學(xué)后來陪它。
Wilbur五周大時，Mr.Arable準備賣了它，在母親的建議下，他們將它送到了隔壁Uncle Homer的農(nóng)場Zuckermams. 在這里小豬Wilbur開啟了一段奇幻之旅。
在這個畜棚里，生活著馬、羊、鵝，一只叫Templeton的老鼠，還有Wilbur的朋友Charlotte，一只外表看起來大膽殘忍，但內(nèi)心卻和善、忠誠和真實的蜘蛛。
Wilbur是人們所說的Spring Pig，就是春天出生的小豬，這意味它將面臨所有Spring Pig都將面臨的問題：就是會在圣誕節(jié)被屠殺被人們食用。
Charlotte承諾要救小豬Wilbur，她不停的思考著方法。She was naturally patient. She knew from experience that if she waited long enough, a fly would come think to her web; and she felt sure that if she thought long enough about Wilbur's problem, an idea would come to her mind.
七月中旬的一天早上她終于想到了一個方法——用她最擅長最熟悉的織網(wǎng)來讓人們意識到Wilbur的特殊性，來解救他?！癝OME PIG”，這是第一個網(wǎng)，它成功吸引到了人們的注意，小鎮(zhèn)的人們紛紛前來看望Wilbur和這個特別的網(wǎng)。
幾天后，Charlotte召集動物們開了會，并想出第二個詞，“TERRIFIC”，看到這個網(wǎng)時異常開心激動的Mr.Zuckerman決定帶Wilbur去參加9月6日的Country Fair.
Templeton帶來了第三個詞“RADIANT”，每次Charlotte編織出不同的網(wǎng)時，Wilbur都盡量去表現(xiàn)的符合這些特質(zhì)，Some Pig 、Terrific、Radiant. Wilbur成了名豬，它樂此不疲地享受著Charlotte為它帶來的榮譽與注意力，希望可以在Country Fair上贏得獎牌和錢，以此獲得活下去的機會。
Charlotte和Templeton跟著Wilbur來到了Fair，為了幫助Wilbur贏得獎品，Charlotte耗盡力氣織了最后一個字“HUMBLE”，然后開始孕育它的蜘蛛寶寶。Charlotte成功幫助Wilbur贏得了特殊獎項，并為Mr.Zuckerman贏得了25美元的獎金。
"Why did you do all this formeq?" Wilbur asked. "I don't deserve it. I've never done anything for you."
"You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all,?what's a life, anyway? We're born, we live a little while, we die. A spider's life can't help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone's life can stand a little of that."
Charlotte太老太虛弱已經(jīng)不能跟他們回畜棚了，Wilbur請求Templeton幫忙就她的514只蜘蛛寶寶帶回去了。第二天Charlotte死去了。
Nobody, of the hundreds of people that had visited the Fair, knew that a grey spider had played the most important part of all. No one was with her when she died.
春去秋來，日復(fù)一日，年復(fù)一年，Wilbur得到Mr.Zuckerman的悉心照料，在畜棚里過著平靜的日子。但是他不曾忘記Charlotte。Although he loved her children and grandchildren dearly, none of the new spiders ever quite took her place in his heart. she was in a class by herself.?It's not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good whiter. Charlotte was both.
