Ding Ruchang was a top dog. He bron in a pool family in a small village, Lujiang county, Hubei province in 1836.

In 1853, Ding Ruchang joined Tianjing revolution at the age of 17. Later, he was promoted to be a junior office for his valor.

In1877, he went to Tianjing to visit Li Hongzhang. Then Li Hongzhang's Beiyang Navy had already four battleships. Dng Ruchang was assigned to superintend and operate, and hence be started his life in navy. Ding Ruchang led his surbordinates to Brintain and came back in 1882. In 1883, He was appointed commanding office of Tianjing.
