Personal Statement

Due to various reasons, the city walls of my hometown Taiyuan were not preserved as complete as those in Xi’an, Beijing, and other cities during China’s War of Liberation. Several important elements of the city, such as city walls and drum towers, have been completely demolished. Like all cities in the country, Taiyuan’s urban construction process after the reform and opening-up has removed many heritage buildings. As for the historical blocks, it is rare for cities across China to truly retain them intact. For example, the existing historical districts in Taiyuan are the Zhonglou Street in the South City—Haizibian, and the Wuyi Road district in the North City, both of which have been massively destructed in terms of the block texture, and the block style is almost non-existent. Therefore, the heritage of Taiyuan has been poorly preserved.

Fortunately, there is still hope for some streets to become sustainable heritage. For instance, Jiaochang Alley, Confucian Temple Alley, and Jingying Alley may also get maintained and become sustainable historical trails. But as far as the individual ancient buildings are concerned, they are not quite satisfactory. Examples I can think of include Shanxi University Hall, Imperial Temple, Chunyang Palace, Confucian Temple, National Normal School, Military Building, Three Guandi Temples, and former residences of folk houses.

Nonetheless, the most worrying thing is that even if the above-mentioned heritage buildings are protected and promoted to the greatest extent, they will still be old and damaged in varying degrees since most of the local heritage buildings are from the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Therefore, I intend to work on applying for those heritage buildings the protection of national and provincial cultural relics protection systems to keep their sustainability regarding completeness and originality, such as Jinci. And for some smaller buildings, due to various issues such as fund management, many damaged places cannot be repaired and restored. Besides, the scale of renovation is usually relatively large, plus the extra expansion work from time to time, systematic approaches are needed for me to contribute to the profession. Therefore, I would like to go professionally with this degree at UCL to help preserve heritage buildings in my hometown and dedicate myself to passing on the cultural heritage of Taiyuan.

To master the systematic approaches to correctly preserve values, studying sustainable heritage at UCL is an indispensable step to get me closer to achieving my goal. This MSc combines all aspects of cultural heritage (such as historical buildings, museums, collections, sites, and landscapes, etc.) with the best heritage management and preventive protection policies, projects, methods, and practices, delivering interdisciplinary heritage skills required for my future practice. In addition, this major 1) is certified by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institute for the Preservation of Historic Buildings (IHBC); 2) includes a two-week study visit to Malta, which will endow me with relevant knowledge by learning the management approaches the national museums, sites and collections of Malta and Gozo.

To succeed in your program, my academic and professional background have prepared me for taking on this challenge. Academically, majoring in civil engineering has taught me how buildings are constructed, specifically focusing on building structure and construction. Thus, my undergraduate studies will provide a framework that ensures the safety of heritage buildings while maintaining their firmness. With the key learning aspects of civil engineering, I am capable of turning the design drawings of heritage maintenance projects into reality through technical means and organizational measures. Professionally, working for Taiyuan Zexin Engineering Supervision and Consultation has introduced me to the world of construction projects for the first time, transferring my theoretical knowledge to practice. Then, working for Shanxi First Construction Group has deepened my understanding of building structures and maintenance management, which can be applied to promoting sustainable heritage. Most recently, working for Beijing Orient Landscape has offered me a chance to participate in the system design and expansion plan related to the overall landscape design, allowing me to adopt a holistic approach towards building transformation. Overall, I am confident that I have laid a solid foundation for further enhancement at UCL.
