“mean”作動(dòng)詞除了“意思是”外，還常用來表示“意味著”“產(chǎn)生......的結(jié)果”。想表達(dá)“A 事件意味著/導(dǎo)致某種情況”時(shí)，就可以想到使用 mean，這也是外刊中常見的用法。這個(gè)意思看似簡單，但很多英語學(xué)習(xí)者可能并沒有掌握。我們來通過幾個(gè)例句掌握這個(gè)用法。
許多“月光族”一拿到工資就會(huì)用來還信用卡、交房租、去超市買食物。對于特別拮據(jù)的家庭來說，他們必須在把錢花在吃還是住上做出艱難的選擇。我們可以用英文表達(dá)為：
A meager salary means that the family has to choose between paying rent and buying groceries.
場景：和Adom結(jié)婚意味著她放棄了真愛選擇了金錢。
造句：Marrying Adom means she gives up her true love and choose momey.
再看一個(gè)句子：
The pouring rain means that the football match will be canceled.
從以上例句可以看出，mean 后面常接從句。它也可以直接接名詞短語或者動(dòng)名詞。比如：
A promotion doesn't necessarily mean a pay raise. (mean 后直接接名詞）
His new job at a consulting firm will mean traveling all over the country.（mean 后接動(dòng)名詞，注意這種用法出現(xiàn)頻率較低）
需要注意的是，“mean”作“意味著”“產(chǎn)生...的結(jié)果”時(shí)沒有進(jìn)行時(shí)。也就是說，不會(huì)說“something is meaning...”，只會(huì)說“something means that/doing something...”。
最新一期《經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)人》中多次出現(xiàn)了“mean”的這種用法。一篇寫石油公司 ExxonMobil（?？松梨冢┑奈恼轮杏羞@么一句：
