Once upon a time, there were four brothers who lived in a far away land.
曾經(jīng)，有四兄弟住在一個遙遠(yuǎn)的國土上。
Their father was an old king.
他們的父親大人是一個老國王。
One day he said, "I will not live long now. Today you must start out into the world. In a year, bring back the best thing you have found. The one who can pick the best thing shall be the new king."
一天老國王說：“我不可能長命百歲，現(xiàn)在開始你們必須要開始闖天涯。一年內(nèi)，把你們發(fā)現(xiàn)的最好的東西帶回來。誰能把最好的東西帶回來，誰就是新國王?！?
The first brother said, "I will look in every city or town. I will buy the best thing I can for my father."
大兄弟說：“我會巡遍每一個城市鄉(xiāng)鎮(zhèn)。我會把最好的東西買回來獻(xiàn)給我的父親大人?！?/p>
The next two brothers said, "We will both go on fast ships over the sea. We will find something better."
二兄弟和三兄弟說：“我們倆會登上海上快速的艦艇，我們會找到更好的東西?！?/p>
The last brother said, "I am going to ask the people here in our own land to tell me the best thing."
小兄弟說：“我會詢問我們國家的子民（什么是）最好的東西?！?/p>
The other three brothers began to laugh. "Then you will never be king!" They said.
其他三個兄弟開始哈哈大笑，嘲笑他說：“你是不會成為國王的。”
The last brother started off.
小王子啟程了。
When he had gone about six miles, he met a man. "What do you carry in those big bags?" he asked.
當(dāng)他出發(fā)了六英里，他遇到了一個男人，他問道：“你的那些大袋子里裝了什么??？”
"The best thing in the world," said the man. "These are full of the good nuts which fall from my five nut trees."
“是世界上最好的東西”，男人回答，“這些袋子里裝滿了飽滿的堅果，都是從我的五棵堅果樹上掉下來的?！?/p>
"I don't think that would work," said the brother to himself, "I must try again."
“我覺得那還不是世界上最好的東西”他自言自語，“我必須再試一次。”
The brother went on another seven miles. He found a small brown bird.
小兒子又走了七英里。他發(fā)現(xiàn)了一只棕色的小鳥。
It had been hurt, so he put it in his coat where it could keep warm.
它受傷了，于是他把鳥兒放在他的外套里，那兒可以給他取暖。
As he went on, he saw a little girl crying.
正當(dāng)他在走著，他看到了一個小女孩在哭泣。
He ran to meet her. "Why are you crying?" he asked.
他走到她面前，問道“你為什么哭??？”
"I want to get some water from the well," she said. "We use so much. We drink cold water. We wash the clothes clean with hot water.
“我想從井里打水，”她說.“我們用了太多水。我們喝冷水，用熱水洗衣服。
But I do not know how to pull it up. Please show me."
“但是我不知道怎么把水提上來，請幫幫我?！?/p>
The brother said,” Hold this bird and I will help you. It does not fly around any more because it got its wing cut."
小王子說：“我可以幫你，你幫我拿一下這只小鳥。它不會飛，因為它的翅膀受傷了?！?/p>
"Thank you. What a pretty bird!" she said.
“謝謝你，多么可愛的小鳥??！”她說。
"I wish you would give it to me. If you will let me keep it, I will always be very kind to it. I will take care of it myself. I will make it grow well again."
“我好希望你可以把小鳥給我，如果你讓我保管它，我會對它很好的，我會親自照顧它。我會讓它再次成長的很好。”
"Yes, you may have it," said the brother. So he gave her the bird and went on.
“好的，你可以擁有它，”小王子說。于是他把小鳥給了小姑娘，繼續(xù)上路。
At night, he went to sleep under a round yellow haystack.
晚上，他就睡在枯黃的干草堆里。
When it was light again he walked on.
天剛亮他就要繼續(xù)上路。
Every day he would walk eight or ten miles.
他每天都要走八到十英里。
He asked the people about the best thing in the world.
他問人們世界上最好的東西。
Some said it was best to sing. Some said it was best to run and jump and play.
有人說最好的東西是唱歌，有人說最美好的事物就是能跑能跳能玩耍。
Some said the green grass was best.
有人說綠草坪是最美好的事物。
Some liked the red and blue and white flowers best.
有人覺得紅藍(lán)白相間色的花是最好的。
One man said the best thing was to ride a black horse.
一個人說最好的東西是騎著黑馬。
He always stopped to help people who needed it.
他總是停下來幫助需要幫助的人。
Soon he made many friends. All the people began to like him.
不久之后他結(jié)識了很多朋友。所有的人都開始喜歡他。
They would say, "See there goes the king's son. He would be just the right kind of king for us."
他們說：“看，國王的兒子來了。他正是那種適合我們的好國王?！?/p>
Every door was open to him. The people would call to him to stop.
每扇門都向他打開。人們都叫他停下來。
They would ask him to come and eat with them.
他們都邀請他進來坐坐，和他們吃點東西。
After he ate, he would sit down and read to the children.
吃完東西，他會坐下來和孩子們讀書。
After he read, he showed them how to draw and write.
讀完書，他還會教孩子們畫畫寫字。
Months went by. He still had no beautiful thing to take to his father.
幾個月過去了，他還是沒能找到精致的東西帶給他的父親大人。
Just before the year was done, he went home again.
正好在年前，他再次回到家。
The time came when the king called his sons together.
國王召集他的兒子們的時間到了。
"What did you bring?" He asked them all. The other brothers had many beautiful things.
“你們都帶了什么？”他問所有的兒子。其他幾兄弟都拿出來很多精美的物品。
"And what did you bring?" said the king to the last brother.
“那你帶了什么？”國王問小兒子。
"This is too funny!" said the other brothers.
“太可笑了”其他兄弟說。
"He has nothing!" But the king was kind to the last brother.
“他什么都沒帶！”但是國王對小王子很慈祥。
"What did you bring me?" the king asked again.
“你給我?guī)Я耸裁?？”國王又問了一遍?/p>
"I bring only the friendship of your people," said the last brother.
“我只帶了你的子民的友誼”小兒子說。
"That is the best thing!" cried his father. "You shall be the new king."
“那是最好的東西！”父親喜極而泣。“你是新的國王！”
