Why is there Gender Discrimination in China's Job Market?

Surveys and recent media reports show gender discrimination pushes down upon Chinese job seekers. Gender discrimination holds Chinese women stagnant in finding jobs in the job market. There are some reasons for it.

First, traditional Chinese Confucianism holds women in a submissive state and women hold a lower hierarchical status than men. As a result, job opportunities lean in favor of men. Sometimes potential employers impose greater restrictions on women because female applicants are often turned down for the reason that the jobs are not “suitable” for the female.

Second, China’s job market in general is still dictated by oversupply of labor given its huge working population, which enables employers to become very picky in hiring workers by setting up various discriminatory requirements. Gender discrimination is one of these artificial barriers.

Third, the traditionally held belief is that Chinese women’s jobs should be within their families. Their roles are about helping the younger children in a motherly sense, but not climbing the leadership ladder or striving for leadership positions. Therefore, in order to fit social norms, some women don’t want to modify their nature just to get a better job.

To break through the barrier, on the one hand, Chinese government should enact policies against gender discrimination in the job market so as to create equal opportunities for males and females. On the other hand, women call for some sense of a competitive spirit to use their best assets to their advantage. A society that women will never be slammed into the invisible barrier must be a better one. (259 words)
