Earthquake

This lecture mainly talked about the formation of an earthquake. Firstly it illustrated the relationship between fault planes and earthquakes. After that it named the hypo-center which located beneath the crust of earth's interior as the focus of the earthquake. The speaker also highlighted that through looking at the fault plane, we are able to locate and determine the position of the epicenter which it vertically above the focus on the earth's surface. Finally, the vertical fault movements through the hypo-center generate seismic waves and earthquakes occur.

When an earthquake occurs, the shock waves of released energy that shake the Earth and temporarily turn soft deposits, such as?clay, into jelly (liquefaction) are called seismic waves, from the Greek ‘seismos’ meaning ‘earthquake’. Seismic waves are usually generated by movements of the Earth’s?tectonic plates but may also be caused by explosions, volcanoes and landslides.
