The Raft of the Medusa,1818-1819

席里柯生于法國魯昂,幼年隨全家遷往巴黎,1808年從畫馬名家韋爾內(nèi)學畫。1810年入蓋蘭畫室,與德拉克洛瓦相識,常去盧浮宮臨摹古代大師的名作。學生時代席里柯就表現(xiàn)出不肯循規(guī)蹈矩地遵從古典原則的氣概,被他保守的老師所排斥,認為他學畫沒有什么前途,最好改行。以后席里柯去意大利學習,驚嘆米開朗基羅的創(chuàng)造力,成為這位大師的崇拜者。

席里柯有志于創(chuàng)新,注重個人情感的表達,在作品中往往流露出米開朗基羅般的宏偉感和運動感。席里柯常從現(xiàn)實生活中獲取靈感,描繪他一生熱愛和熟悉的馬匹和騎手,繪制大量速寫然后進行創(chuàng)作。席里柯的第一幅參加沙龍展的作品《沖鋒的騎兵軍官》,表現(xiàn)了戰(zhàn)火紛飛的戰(zhàn)場上一位揮刀馳騁的指揮官,榮獲金獎。席里柯還創(chuàng)作了取材于當代事件的不朽巨作《梅杜薩之筏》。席里柯的作品曾去英國展出,得到很高的評價。
