動漫是在空白紙上創(chuàng)造一個全新的世界，而作為主要的場景元素，建筑在營造故事氛圍方面則功不可沒。
最近在悉尼剛剛開幕的“動漫建筑”展，向人們展出了超過 100 幅日本經(jīng)典動漫電影的水彩手稿圖、實景照片和動漫分鏡頭等，包括《攻殼機動隊》、《機動警察》劇場版、《大都會》等。展覽中還展示了背景圖的繪制過程，通常會有團隊去測量真實建筑的位置并拍攝，然后畫黑白素描，最后上色，這會讓動畫本身顯得真實，而不像是幻想中的世界。
但建造虛構世界的藝術過程是艱苦的，在動畫電影制作中，一位美工設計師有時候會被叫作電影建筑師，他們的工作是向導演提供不同鏡頭下能容納故事發(fā)生的場景，讓場景變成電影中不可或缺的元素。
《攻殼機動隊》（1995）無疑是世界上最著名的動畫電影之一，它的背景是基于東京、香港等城市原型繪制的，同時這種風格也影響了許多好萊塢導演。
