What the formula taught me is that every story and novel is collapsible (可壓縮的)to some degree. If you can't get out ten percent of it while retaining the basic story and flavor, you're not trying very hard.

No.1:
I got a scribbled comment that changed the way I rewrote my fiction once and forever. Jotted below the machine-generated signature of the editor was this mot: “Not bad, but puffy. You need to revise for length. Formula: 2nd Draft= 1st Draft-10%. Good Luck."
scribbled:潦草的
「聯(lián)想」之前分析過-scribe抄寫員- ascribe歸因于, 今天繼續(xù)看scribbled意思為潦草的,scribbler(a person who writes for a living or as a hobby) 耍筆桿子的人, 發(fā)現(xiàn)作者Stephen King用這個(gè)字根的單詞特別多,簡直是大全了!
mot:a witty remark

No.2:
I got used to the sort of rejection note that starts Dear Contributor and so came to relish any little personal dash on these printed pink-slips. They were few and far between, but when they came they never failed ?to lighten my day and put a smile on my face.
「聯(lián)想」relish:享受 relish the fish.
「地道短語」have no relish for不喜歡,不感興趣
slip 滑倒v.小錯(cuò)誤n.
「地道短語」a slip of the tongue/pen: a small mistake you make when you are speaking or writing, especially by using the wrong word 口誤/筆誤〔尤指誤用詞語〕
「地道短語」few and far between 極為罕見
No.3:
Nevertheless, you need to beware--if you slow the pace down too ?much, even the most patient reader is apt to grow restive.
「拆分」restive= rest休息,安息+ ive
「地道短語」be apt to 易于做某事
