Why does my child need to study sight words?

Sight word acquisition is an important aspect of developing into a successful reader. Once a child has mastered all of the Dulche (or Fry) sight word lists, they are able to read about 75% of most children's literacy. The first 100 most common sight words make up about 50% of what we read. Most sight words do not follow common spelling patterns and are not easily decoded through phonics. When a child has trouble decoding a word, their rate of fluency is impacted, along with their comprehension. A balanced approach to reading includes both phonics instruction and whole language instruction.
