For me, the most striking Monument I’ve ever seen is the Scott Monument, which stand at the axis of the city of Edinburgh And a focal point within that vista.
The moment I glanced it, I was taken aback by its majesty.
It is built to commemorate Sir Walter Scott, one of the most influential Scottish novelists. The Largest monument to a writer in the world, it is really impressive. When I looked up the statue, I felt humble and a sense of awe. The statue, fashioned from a single piece of marble weighing 30 ton features Scott and his beloved houndMaida. He is sitting there, as if he is thinking about a plot of a new novel.
The exterior is decorated with 64 carvings of characters from Scott’s novels, inside you can see an exhibition on Scott's Life, and if you climb the 287 steps to the top, you are able to have a superb panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings.
The large statue of Scott is in Italian Carrara marble, which made it strikingly noticeable in the imposing black structure made from sandstone quarried in West Lothian of Scotland. The black body of the monument enabled me to recall the historic events that have over-arching influence on the civilization of mankind.
I was also inspired by stories of the designer.Back in 17 century, following Scott's death in 1832, a competition was held to design a monument to him.
Among all the contestants including leading architects at that moment, a completely unknown draftsman, and self-taught architect lack of
architectural qualifications and reputation, was awarded the contract to
construct the monument.However, unfortunately, he never lived to see it completed.
