他的身價曾經(jīng)達(dá)到過900億美元,一直都是全世界人民心中的“世界首富”;
他創(chuàng)造的微軟市場價值曾經(jīng)超過6000億美元,在很長一段時間內(nèi)都被稱為是全球最成功的公司;
在他的帶領(lǐng)下,微軟創(chuàng)造了曾經(jīng)全球最火的產(chǎn)品———Windows,幾乎每個人的生活、工作都離不開這款產(chǎn)品;
作為全球最成功企業(yè)的leader,他要同時對付產(chǎn)業(yè)、技術(shù)、法律、行政、華爾街等諸多問題,因此也被譽為擁有最強頭腦的人;
與此同時,他建立了世界上最大的慈善機構(gòu),又對外宣布不會把遺產(chǎn)傳承給自己的兒女,而是全數(shù)投入慈善事業(yè),因此他又被稱為是世界上最慷慨的慈善家;
有人說他是世界上最貪婪的人———天天從股市里提款,還恨不得自己駕著F16戰(zhàn)斗機全世界打擊盜版;
有人說他是最無情的人———消費者已經(jīng)為一個Office產(chǎn)品給他支付了400多億美元,可還是漏洞百出;
有人說他是最兇狠的人———總是下意識地攻擊任何人、任何事;
高中時,為獲得源代碼,蓋茨曾經(jīng)去翻垃圾箱;
為免費使用電腦,蓋茨和艾倫黑了C-Cubed公司會計文件;
投資避孕套,據(jù)說是新一代超薄避孕套,采用突破性材料,令其“非常非常薄”,感覺宛如皮膚,提升快感;
發(fā)起了“徹底改造馬桶”競賽,向8所知名大學(xué)的研究人員提供300萬美元,以重新設(shè)計瓷器“寶座”;
投資“人造雞蛋”,以雞蛋替代品做出餅干、糕點、蛋黃醬、蛋卷、吐司和煎蛋等蛋類相關(guān)食品,這項科技未來可能顛覆全球蛋類產(chǎn)業(yè);
In almost every metric, Bill Gates was a great CEO:
1.He created tens of thousands of high paying jobs and is a hero among the developers at Microsoft, even now.
2.He built an excess of $200b for the stockholders and MSFT had one of the dream runs in stock market history (from 1980 to 1999).
3.He brought PC and computing to the common man, and without his push it is arguable that the computing world would be a much different place.
4.He is a great philanthropist who has contributed a lot both to Seattle's local community (through United Way & others) and to the broader world.
5.While the tech world hates him, you have to accept that he is the most well-known CEO in the world. Even in the developing world, a random guy would know who Bill Gates is without knowing anything about the US economy or technology.
6.If there were no Bill Gates but just Apple & IBM, it is less likely that the computing revolution would have entered the developing world. In countries such as India, we would have never been able to afford the Mac or a proprietary IBM box on a larger scale. That means we would have continued to stay in poverty with no hope.
He was good for workers, customers, shareholders and society at large.
1、他創(chuàng)造了成千上萬個高薪的崗位,他是微軟所有開發(fā)者中最偉大的英雄,即使是現(xiàn)在;
2、他為股東創(chuàng)造了超$200B的財富,令微軟成為了股市歷史上難以逾越的神話(1980至1999年);
3、他讓計算機在千家萬戶中普及,沒有他的推動,計算機和互聯(lián)網(wǎng)是否可以達(dá)到現(xiàn)如今的地位,值得商榷;
4、他是一個偉大的慈善家,他為西雅圖的當(dāng)?shù)厣鐓^(qū)以及世界其他各個角落的慈善事業(yè)都做出了卓越的貢獻(xiàn);
5、盡管高科技屆有很多人恨他,但還是不得不承認(rèn),他是世界上最知名的CEO。即使在發(fā)展中國家,大多數(shù)的人都知道比爾?蓋茨,就算他們對美國的經(jīng)濟(jì)或者技術(shù)一無所知;
The reasons I think Bill Gates was a good CEO are:
1. As a visionary founder, he had nothing to prove to anybody, and had a natural appetite for undertaking new, innovative ventures. He never thought anything was impossible for Microsoft. He had a clear vision for Microsoft and delivered it:- making technology accessible to everybody. Whether it be a PC for every desk, or making it more accessible for you to buy databases, the underly philosophy of Bill Gates as about access. (today it is about universal access to health care and education). He made Microsoft into a company that changed the world and brought mass computing to people and businesses. If you measure the total increase in business and personal productivity over last two decades, probably a lot comes thanks to MSFT, directly or indirectly.
2. He was clearly able to hire and retain good people who balanced out his vision with good organization skills and solid business skills. Visionary founders often fail here: being able to recognize what they are not good at, and entrusting other people with their "baby".
3. He planned and was discplined about succession. It is very hard to replace the energy and vision of a founder. It is impossible to know the outcomes before the benefit of hindsight, but by all measures, Ballmer was a great choice: he loved the company as much, was highly competent, knew every detail about MSFT businesses, is smart and energetic. I think the issue is not with who Bill chose as his successor, the issue is with how Ballmer could have dealt with the unforeseen rise of Google, Facebook, Salesforce, etc.
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are good analogues:brilliant, driven, broad in capacity for understanding and vision, with an inhuman capacity to consolidate information and lead. They both combined skillsets and personalities into one package that are only seen in rare intances across generations.
Anyone who had the pleasure of sitting in on one of the vaunted "BillG Reviews" back in the day knows what I mean. The Bill you see on TV is not the Bill that Microsoft saw behind closed doors. His energy, intellect, passion, ability to distill the most complex problems into basics in seconds while flinging a furious barrage of 'F' bombs, single handedly drove Microsoft until it could no longer, IMHO. Even Gates capacity couldn't scale to meet his model of success through micromanagement.
I personally feel he left because he knew this (and was likely burning out). Icontend it's a big part of the reason he won't come back - that and the Gates Foundation. He's got bigger fish to fry than worrying about a company that still makes lots of money.
Being from a completely non IT field. I'll take this one task of trying to answer this.
Bill Gates a good CEO for Microsoft
Why?
Look around and notice how the world has paced in the last few decades.Great engineering , Infrastructures, Fast cars,Modern Aircraft's carrying up to 850 passengers in its belly. All this happened in the last 3-4 decades. WOW!!!! Miss something in this? Something commonly referred to as a mobile phone revolution in the last decade.
Along with that came something very exciting , an IT revolution triggering millions of jobs worldwide.
Sure today we have Android dominating the mobile market and iOS followed next.The Stock price of Apple ever mounting,Google’s balance sheets increasing in sizable numbers year on year basis.Facebook and n number of successful start ups have led to this revolution in the IT industry and slowly moving in to the mobile industry.
All this said and written,We need to understand what was the driving force behind this revolution.
This Man started all this.
The reason we were able to move from
To this a little more than a decade later
And more recently to this
The single answer to this revolution is Microsoft led by Bill Gates.
Had there be no microsoft in the world or more specifically Windows in the world , we might still be either stuck with those giant IBM machines or those exsorbidantly priced Macintosh.
Performance of Microsoft when Bill Gates was the CEO.
In late 1999 Microsoft’s valuation reached some dizzying heights. And that was 15 years ago. On Dec. 27, 1999 Microsoft’s valuation hit an all-time record of more than $613 billion. In today’s dollars that would be more than $873 billion.
Yes those figures are correct, imagine how many fortunes were made simply because of this, How many jobs were created by this Software Giant!
All this under the vision of Bill Gates.
An un matched monopoly in the PC industry, Apple until late 2008 did not even more than 3% share in the global PC market. To create a product is one thing ,to sustain the company against it’s rival is another and to dominate the world with your product deserves a salute.
Bill gates was one of the greatest visionaries the world has ever seen and would ever see for a long long time.The amount of innovation given by Microsoft under his leadership is matchless during the 90’s.The amount of wealth created by Microsoft at it’s peak in 1999 is yet to matched by Apple(if we take inflation into account). Without Bill Gates the entire PC industry would not have been the same,He bought PC’s to the developing nations at a pace that no corporation could match.
All this when Bill Gates was the top boss at the Microsoft Headquarters.Could Microsoft had got a better CEO than him? NO Chance.
A good rule of thumb is that anytime someone builds one of the most valuable companies of all time during their tenure as CEO, he or she was a good CEO.
Microsoft has been criticized for a long time for trying to kill the competition and also the open source community.
Windows is not open source but at least its not as restrictive as Mac OS or the "new" Windows is.
You can pretty much change the whole user interface of windows with the give APIs without knowing the source code.
Also that it also gives the freedom to save costs by going for a budget hardware or going for a PC of the brand you trust or the colour you want etc.
If I am a software engineer now and I can probably afford a mac or understand what computer is, its all because of the affordable Windows PC I used in my childhood.
If windows was not there, Apple would have eaten the personal computing world and everyone would be locked into its control.
All the credit goes to Bill Gates for this.
The guy basically told the world that Software is a separate entity and can be soldindependent of the hardware.
All Software engineers owe one to him, even if they hate him!
In Smartphone era, Apple did the same with iOS and but Windows joined the party very late.
but thank god Android came in and basically did the same thing or much more than what Windows did with PC.
gave people choice of hardware and price and that's what a common man wants. :)
This is an astonishing question. Bill Gates made Microsoft. Microsoft didn't magically spring out of Zeus's head and find Bill Gates in the freezer section of CEO-Mart.
A better question is, was there ever a period of a whole month when Bill Gates was a bad CEO?
When I started my Microsoft career about 5 years back, Gates was long gone (address list listed him as a non-executive chairman when I searched on my first day), but there is something I noticed. Almost all the MS veterans I met spoke highly of him. They still does and they have their reasons.
To answer the question; in simple words, a company's enormous success when he was leading it will tell you how good a CEO was. If you dig deep, you'll be able to find a hundred reasons to say otherwise but hey, look at the company now, or, look at the desktops/laptops you see around. He has a significant hand in putting it all out there and making our lives easier.
I would argue that Bill Gates did an excellent job during the 80's and first part of the 90's, and an awful job from then on, leaving Steve Ballmer with one heck of a mess, including a terrible antitrust battle against the USA and EU (something which Intel largely avoided). Ballmer did a good job initially cleaning up Bill Gates' antitrust messes, and focusing the company on its key product lines, but failed to lead the company to catch up with a very fast moving industry. Both deserve a lot of blame for Microsoft's current poor strategic position and disastrous execution (such as Vista) -- being too tied to legacy businesses and not able to embrace the transition from PC generation to Internet.
總結(jié):
