【Mind your P's and Q's.的意思是"小心謹(jǐn)慎。",用于指某人的活動(dòng)尤其是社交場合的活動(dòng)。這個(gè)詞語已經(jīng)有好幾百年的歷史了,關(guān)于它的故事也很多。
其一是說這個(gè)成語跟酒店有關(guān)。當(dāng)時(shí),在酒店里有兩種器具:品脫(pint)和夸脫(quart),品脫小,夸脫大,一夸脫等于兩品脫。因此,酒店侍者必須要記清喝酒人到底用的是哪種器具。酒店老板也不斷告誡他們:"注意你們的品脫和夸脫(Mind your pints and quarts.)。"后來,pints和quarts逐漸簡寫成"P's and Q's"了。
