Why they are needed?

To help reward miners for when duplicate block solutions are found because of the shorter block times of Ethereum (compared to other cryptocurrency). An uncle is a smaller reward than a full block. (And if they are submitted later than the next block, the reward rapidly diminishes, ending at zero after seven blocks later.)

由于eth的區(qū)塊時(shí)間非常短，eth非常容易在短時(shí)間分叉，為了獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)在那短時(shí)間里在“孤兒塊”（也就是下一個(gè)區(qū)塊的叔塊），即非主鏈上挖礦的礦工，eth在區(qū)塊中放入了uncle塊來(lái)獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)他們的工作。

當(dāng)然的是，他們的回報(bào)比主鏈礦工要少。而且隨著離主鏈的偏移越來(lái)越大而越來(lái)越少。

個(gè)人理解：

這個(gè)機(jī)制意義不大，首先對(duì)于礦工來(lái)說(shuō)選擇礦池本身就是一種博弈，長(zhǎng)期挖掘維持收益穩(wěn)定是常識(shí)。沒(méi)必要保證u所有人的短期利益。
