閑來(lái)無(wú)事在家里翻書架，發(fā)現(xiàn)自己居然買過(guò)原版的《烏托邦》(Utopia)！

盡管已對(duì)空想社會(huì)主義完全沒(méi)有興趣，我還是翻開(kāi)看了一下，結(jié)果——第一句話就梗死了……

上過(guò)牛津大學(xué)、擔(dān)任過(guò)大法官的托馬斯?莫爾（Sir ThomasMore）果真是有兩把刷子的，句子超長(zhǎng)，成分很復(fù)雜，單詞很高級(jí)。這本書的第一句話有99個(gè)單詞，其中我不認(rèn)識(shí)的生詞達(dá)4個(gè)。我們先來(lái)看看這第一句話。

Upon a time, when tidings came to the city of Corinth that King Philip, father to Alexander surnamed the Great, was coming thitherward with an army royal to lay siege to the city, the Corinthians, being forthwith stricken with great fear, began busily and earnestly to look about them and to fall to work of all hands, some to scour and trim up harness, some to carry stones, some to amend and build higher the walls, some to rampire and fortify the bulwarks and fortresses, some one thing and some another for the defending and strengthening of the city.

是的，你沒(méi)看錯(cuò)，這是一句話。

我仔細(xì)了三遍，才找出了這句話的主謂賓?？橙ツ切┲χθ~葉的定語(yǔ)，這句話主要是說(shuō)這么個(gè)事：When tidings came to the city of Corinth that King Philip was coming to lay siege to the city, the Corinthians began to look about them and to fall to work of all hands. 當(dāng)菲利普國(guó)王要包圍柯林斯城的消息傳來(lái)時(shí)，柯林斯人開(kāi)始到處搜尋敵人，想方設(shè)法保家衛(wèi)國(guó)。

這本書應(yīng)當(dāng)是我高中時(shí)候買的，當(dāng)時(shí)估計(jì)連第一句話都沒(méi)看完?，F(xiàn)在重新看這本書，看完第一句話就再也不想讀下去。這本書，對(duì)我提高英文水平，完全沒(méi)有一絲一毫的幫助！

所以，不是任何書都能提高英文水平。我在上一篇推送中也提到過(guò)，學(xué)習(xí)資料既不能太簡(jiǎn)單，也不能太難，太簡(jiǎn)單人沒(méi)有進(jìn)步，太難會(huì)缺乏學(xué)習(xí)下去的興致。

如果是高中生或過(guò)了大學(xué)英語(yǔ)四級(jí)的大學(xué)生，想通過(guò)看原版書來(lái)提高英文水平，顯然《霍比特人》或《哈里?波特》難度更加合適一些。我們來(lái)看看霍比特人的開(kāi)頭段吧。

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. It had a perfectly round door like a porthole, painted green, with a shiny yellow brass knob in the exact middle.

在地底洞穴中住著一個(gè)霍比特人。這可不是那種邋遢、臟亂、潮濕、蠕蟲(chóng)遍布、爛泥味道充斥的地洞，也不是一個(gè)干燥、空洞、到處是沙、無(wú)處可坐、無(wú)東西可吃的地洞。這是一個(gè)霍比人地洞，這意味著舒適。它有一個(gè)艙口般的、被漆成綠色的圓門，門正中央有一個(gè)閃閃發(fā)光的黃銅把手。

盡管有一些不認(rèn)識(shí)的單詞，比如porthole，但它的句子結(jié)構(gòu)簡(jiǎn)潔清晰，不需要刻意去找主謂賓，分析句子成分，只需要查查生詞即可。這本書的中文譯文也是比較口語(yǔ)化的（上面是我自己的譯文，還是有點(diǎn)書面語(yǔ)化，未能準(zhǔn)確傳達(dá)原文的文風(fēng)）。它不像《烏托邦》那么難懂費(fèi)神，即使中文譯本，《烏托邦》讀起來(lái)也相當(dāng)費(fèi)心力。

相比較起來(lái)，我還是更喜歡讀《霍比特人》這種語(yǔ)言簡(jiǎn)潔準(zhǔn)確、內(nèi)容有趣的書。

如果我高中時(shí)候選擇的是類似《霍比特人》這樣的書，我可能還有機(jī)會(huì)在高中或大學(xué)時(shí)代讀完一本原版書呢，可惜我選擇的是《烏托邦》，一本買回來(lái)后第一句話都沒(méi)看完的書。
