The Testimony of John

19This is the testimony of John [the Baptist] when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20And he confessed [truthfully] and did not deny [that he was only a man], but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!” 21They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the [promised] Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26John answered them, “I baptize [only] [a]in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and of whom you know nothing. 27It is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the [b]strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].” 28These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.

29The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God [c]who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’ 31[d]I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing [e]in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.” 32John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, “I have seen the [f]Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah], but He who sent me to baptize [g]in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this One is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34I myself have [actually] seen [that happen], and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!”

b John 1:27 During this era it was customary for a household servant to remove a guest’s sandals and wash the dust from his feet. John is saying that he is not worthy even to remove Christ’s sandal, let alone to touch His feet.

19 約翰所作的見證記在下面:猶太人從耶路撒冷差祭司和利未人到約翰那里,問他說:「你是誰?」 20 他就明說,并不隱瞞,明說:「我不是基督?!?21 他們又問他說:「這樣,你是誰呢?是以利亞嗎?」他說:「我不是。」「是那先知嗎?」他回答說:「不是。」 22 于是他們說:「你到底是誰,叫我們好回復(fù)差我們來的人。你自己說,你是誰?」 23 他說:「我就是那在曠野有人聲喊著說:『修直主的道路』,正如先知以賽亞所說的?!?24 那些人是法利賽人差來的(或譯:那差來的是法利賽人); 25 他們就問他說:「你既不是基督,不是以利亞,也不是那先知,為甚么施洗呢?」 26 約翰回答說:「我是用水施洗,但有一位站在你們中間,是你們不認(rèn)識的, 27 就是那在我以后來的,我給他解鞋帶也不配?!?28 這是在約旦河外伯大尼(有古卷:伯大巴喇),約翰施洗的地方作的見證。 29 次日,約翰看見耶穌來到他那里,就說:「看哪, 神的羔羊,除去(或譯:背負(fù))世人罪孽的! 30 這就是我曾說:『有一位在我以后來、反成了在我以前的,因他本來在我以前?!?31 我先前不認(rèn)識他,如今我來用水施洗,為要叫他顯明給以色列人?!?32 約翰又作見證說:「我曾看見圣靈,仿佛鴿子從天降下,住在他的身上。 33 我先前不認(rèn)識他,只是那差我來用水施洗的、對我說:『你看見圣靈降下來,住在誰的身上,誰就是用圣靈施洗的?!?34 我看見了,就證明這是 神的兒子。」

施洗約翰的最主要的職責(zé)就是為光作見證。約翰的出現(xiàn)同時(shí)讓許多人對他的身份帶來了疑問:到底約翰是誰(一19)?他與將要來的那一位到底有何關(guān)系?約翰清楚的知道自己的工作,更清楚自己的身份,故此他直接的指出他不是基督(一20)、不是以利亞(一21)、不是那位要來的先知(一21)。

約翰三次堅(jiān)定的否認(rèn):「我不是」(一20,21,21),一方面對應(yīng)將來在第十八章有三次記述耶穌勇敢的承認(rèn):「我是」(十八5, 6,8)。事實(shí)上,耶穌的承認(rèn)是有兩次(十八5,8),但作者重復(fù)描述(十八6),就總共有三次有關(guān)的描述了(十八5,6,8)。另一方面可以對應(yīng)彼得三次軟弱的否認(rèn):「我不是」(十八17,25,27) [首二次是直接的描述:「我不是」(十八17, 25),第三次是間接的敍述:他不承認(rèn)(十八27)。]

施洗約翰清楚知道自己的身份,不會(huì)將之與基督的身份混淆(一20-21),是因他完全清楚知道自己的職責(zé),就是要介紹基督,作基督的先鋒:「我就是那在曠野有人聲喊著說:『修直主的道路』…….」(一23)。約翰清楚的知道他的工作是要介紹基督,而不是要介紹自己(一26-27),更不是要讓眾人錯(cuò)誤的將焦點(diǎn)放在自己身上,故此他三次清楚的否定他就是那位要來的(一20-21)。

這段經(jīng)文記述了約翰作見證的內(nèi)容(一29-34),也同時(shí)清楚的帶出了兩個(gè)重要的課題──就是基督的身份,以及基督的工作。約翰清楚的知道他要介紹的就是基督的身份,就是神的兒子(一34);以及基督最主要的工作,就是救贖的工作:「神的羔羊,除去世人罪孽的!」(一29)。為基督作見證,不能缺少的,就是介紹基督神兒子的身份,以及祂為世人所成就的救贖工作。

思想:施洗約翰為神工作,并且清楚知道他所要介紹的是基督,而不是將焦點(diǎn)放在自己身上(一20-21)。你在事奉的過程中,有否常常提醒自己你所要榮耀的是神,而不是要為自己帶來掌聲,更不是要讓大家將焦點(diǎn)放在自己身上?
