Book 1, Chapter 1,
In this chapter, Lewis begins with anobservation from?a common scene of people quarrelling. He notes,??
It looks, in fact, very much as if both partieshad in mind some kind of Law or Rule of fair play or decent behaviour ormorality, or whatever you call it, about which they really agreed.
, and adds
Quarrelling means trying to show? thatthe other man is in the wrong.
He refers to the concept of Right and Wrong traditionally known as the Law of Human Nature. Unlike laws of gravity orchemistry, which are compulsory, the Law of Human Nature allows for choice; man can choose to obey or disobey it.?
Lewis counters the argument that?
a Law of Nature or decent behaviour known to all men is unsound, because differentcivilisations and different ages have had quite different moralities
by stating there have been difference between their moralities, but these have never amounted to anything like a total difference.”?Lewis反駁了這樣一種觀點(diǎn),即“所有人都知道的自然法則或體面行為似乎不太正確,因?yàn)椴煌奈拿骱筒煌瑫r代有著完全不同的道德觀念”。
In Summary,?this chapter emphasizes two facts:?First, that human beings, all over the earth, have this persistent idea that they ought to behave in a certain way and cannot rid themselves of it. Second, that they do not in fact behave in that way. They know the Law of Nature; they break it. These are two foundational truthscritical for clear thinking about ourselves and the universe we live in.?
