1. animation n.動(dòng)畫；動(dòng)畫片；動(dòng)畫制作
There are a great many animation studios all over the world. 世界上有許多優(yōu)秀的動(dòng)畫工作室。
a. animation動(dòng)畫片，動(dòng)漫；動(dòng)畫制作
我們之前熟悉的cartoon更多指的是2D，kid-friendly的卡通片，而諸如皮克斯工作室等制作的現(xiàn)代化的3D動(dòng)畫等叫做animation.
b. animated adj. 動(dòng)畫的
animated film/picture 動(dòng)畫電影；電影大獎(jiǎng)中的最佳長(zhǎng)篇?jiǎng)赢嬍?animated feature.
2. stand out 突出
Pixar is an animation studio that stands out above the rest. 皮克斯是一個(gè)突出于其他同行的動(dòng)畫工作室。
There are many great animation studios all over the world, but there's one that stands out above the rest. 世界上有許多很棒的動(dòng)畫工作室，但是皮克斯動(dòng)畫工作室卻是最出彩。
a. stand out 突出，出彩，顯著；
當(dāng)你想要表現(xiàn)某物/人比其他都優(yōu)秀，那用這個(gè)詞組就是妥妥的了~

b. stand out 另一個(gè)意思是“ to be very noticeable （醒目）”。不是由于優(yōu)秀而突出，而僅僅只是看起來比較顯眼。

The misspelled words with wavy red lines under them really stand out on the screen. 被紅色波浪線標(biāo)出的拼寫錯(cuò)誤在屏幕上看起來超級(jí)醒目。

3. in terms of 就……而言，從……角度考慮
Think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. 不要從做什么，而是要從什么時(shí)候做的角度來考慮你的首要任務(wù)。
The contributions made by Pixar, in terms of innovative technology and great storytelling in their animaitons, are two of the main reasons why they are one step ahead. 皮克斯在技術(shù)創(chuàng)新和敘事方法這兩個(gè)方面做出了顯著的貢獻(xiàn)，也正是這兩個(gè)方面讓皮克斯在眾多動(dòng)畫工作室中脫穎而出。

4. little-known adj.鮮為人知的
What are the little-known secrets of Pixar's creative success? 皮克斯創(chuàng)造性成功背后有哪些鮮為人知的秘密呢？
little-known 從單詞構(gòu)成就能推斷出是極少的人知道，也就是鮮為人知的。
那么類似的詞還有：
less-known 較少人知道的
a less-known but worth watching TV series 不太有名但值得一看的電視劇
well-known 廣為人知的
a well-known British prime minister 著名的英國(guó)首相
5. take risks 冒險(xiǎn)
The first thing Pixar has done well is to take risks and be okay with failure. 皮克斯做的比較好的第一件事情就是勇于冒險(xiǎn)并接受失敗。
a. risk [U] 風(fēng)險(xiǎn)
Both risk and reward are high. 風(fēng)險(xiǎn)與回報(bào)都很高。
b. risk [C] 危險(xiǎn)
run/take a risk 冒險(xiǎn)；
at risk/ in danger 處在危險(xiǎn)之中
6. fair share 大量的
Pixar has seen their fair share of failed projects. 皮克斯也經(jīng)歷了許多失敗的項(xiàng)目。
fair share 是個(gè)名詞詞組，意思是“大量”，是一個(gè)純美式的用法。
one's fair share of sth. 大量
He gets his fair share of attention, too. 他也得到了大量的關(guān)注。
7. innovative adj. 創(chuàng)新的
Pixar has its own rules for fostering an innovative culture. 皮克斯有自己培養(yǎng)創(chuàng)新文化的機(jī)制。
a. innovative adj. 創(chuàng)新的；后面可以搭配technology, culture, ideas, methods etc.?
innovation n. 創(chuàng)新，革新
innovate v. 創(chuàng)新
b. foster v.
1) 培養(yǎng)；foster an interest 培養(yǎng)一個(gè)興趣
2) 養(yǎng)育；foster a child 養(yǎng)一個(gè)孩子
8. embrace v. 欣然接受，樂意采納
The reason why Pixar has achieved more is because they embrace failure and they see it as part of their ability to innovate. 皮克斯比其他工作室成就更多的原因是他們能積極得接受失敗，并將之視為促成革新的能力。
a. embrace v.?欣然接受，樂意采納;比accept 多了一絲積極得意味哦；后面常跟的名詞有failure, opportunity, chance, suggestions等。
embrace failure 接受失敗
This is a great suggestion that I would embrace. 我很樂意接受這個(gè)建議。
Embracing ignorance? That's your big solution？接受無知？這就是你的解決辦法嗎？
相比accesp, embrace 所表示的“接受”是欣然的，樂意的；在這個(gè)復(fù)述句里，接受無知卻用了embrace，有沒有感受到說話者的一絲絲諷刺/憤怒的意味呢？
b. embrace 還有“擁抱”的意思
The boy embraced his mother warmly. 這個(gè)男孩熱情的擁抱了他的媽媽。
我們總是很熱情的接受最新的科技。
We are always eager to embrace the latest technology.
他們擁抱后才說再見的。
They embraced each other before saying goodbye.
9. toss out 扔掉
The filmmaker tossed out a whole movie and completely remade it just nine months before the release date. 就在發(fā)行日期的九個(gè)月前，電影制作人丟棄了整部電影，然后重新制作了一個(gè)全新的版本。
下次表達(dá)“丟掉，丟棄”的意思時(shí)，除了throw away, 也可以用toss out 啦。
Can you just toss out those old and useless chairs? 你就不能扔掉那些又舊又沒用的椅子嗎？
10. tell v. 辨認(rèn)，知道，看出來
Does it work? You can tell from the results that it works/does. 他有用嗎？從結(jié)果來看，它奏效了。
tell 對(duì)我們來說已經(jīng)非常熟悉了，但是除了“告訴”之外，它還有另一個(gè)常用意思哦~在這里，它是“看出來（to know)，辨別出來（to recognize)”的意思。
I can tell that you are angry at me. 我能看出來你在生我的氣。
How can you tell the difference between a twin? 你怎么區(qū)分雙胞胎??？
These two mugs look the same. How can you tell which one is yours? 這兩個(gè)馬克杯看起來一模一樣，你怎么知道哪個(gè)是你的啊？
我能看出來你不開心。
I can tell you are not happy.
兩部電影都很棒，很難講哪個(gè)更好一點(diǎn)。
Both movies are amazing. It's hard to tell which one is better.?
二、Practice
1. 在我看來，皮克斯動(dòng)畫工作室比其他的都好。
In my opinion, Pixar Animation Studio stands out above the others.
2. 就故事敘事方式和動(dòng)畫制作技術(shù)來講，他們是最創(chuàng)新的。
In terms of storytelling and animated technology, they are the most innovative.
3. 我聽說他們勇于冒險(xiǎn)，而且能樂觀的接受失敗。
I have heared that they are willing to take risks and can embrace failure.
勇于冒險(xiǎn) be willing to take risks
樂觀接受失敗 embrace failure; 這里沒有加positively 是因?yàn)閑mbrace 本身就帶有“欣然地，樂意地接受”的含義。
4. 我能看出來他們?cè)诿恳徊侩娪吧隙纪度肓司薮蟮呐Α?/p>
I can tell that they have put significant efforts into each movie.
投入巨大的努力 put great / significant/ huge efforts
5. 皮克斯鮮為人知的成功秘訣對(duì)于個(gè)人成長(zhǎng)也奏效。

work 本身是工作的意思，但也常用于表示“可以奏效，可以運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)”的意思。
Tears don't work for me. 眼淚對(duì)我可沒用。
