前言
奧德賽(Odysseus)和他的同伴來到了Cicones，他們洗劫了城市，殺人、擄掠財富；但是他的伙伴們過于貪婪，當(dāng)那些人們喚來友鄰來幫助時，面對強(qiáng)大的對手，折損了6名士兵(sixmen-at-arms)。逃到海上，并沒有一帆風(fēng)順，宙斯(Zeus)多加阻撓，使得他們偏離了目的地——家。先是來到了忘憂國度(theland of the Lotus-eaters)，島上是些活在夢想中的、以吃蓮花生的人，生活無憂無慮。下船后，他的伙伴們嘗試了這神奇的東西，結(jié)果個個都忘了回家。無奈之下，奧德賽不得不將他們拽捆回去。
在此，不免覺得奧德賽斷然也可想同他的戰(zhàn)友們一樣，吃了這東西，而沉浸在沒有憂愁的國度?？墒牵瑠W德賽并沒有，他毅然決然帶著隊友返航，回到船上，踏上回家的旅程。他思家之心切，家中的有著他的牽掛。
But I brought them back, back
to the hollow ships, and streaming tears—I forced them,
hauled them under the rowing benches, lashed them fast
and shouted out commands to my other, steady comrades:
‘Quick, no time to lose, embark in the racing ships!’—
so none could eat the lotus, forget the voyage home.
然后，他們繼續(xù)踏上征程，來到了獨眼巨人的島上(theland of the high and mighty Cyclops)。他們被這里所吸引，想一探究竟。
I’ll go across with my own ship and crew
and probe the natives living over there.
What are they—violent, savage, lawless?
or friendly to strangers, god-fearing men?’
去不想來到了獨眼巨人的洞中，洞中的資源豐富，也吸引了同伴們，他們想把東西帶會船上。
Let’s make away with the cheeses, then come back—
hurry, drive the lambs and kids from the pens
to our swift ship, put out to sea at once!’
他們在洞中等待洞穴主人的回來，期待著這位主人能夠像其所在的希臘社會那樣，善待賓客。但是，事與愿違。
‘Strangers!’ he thundered out, ‘now who are you?
Where did you sail from, over the running sea-lanes?
Out on a trading spree or roving the waves like pirates,
sea-wolves raiding at will, who risk their lives
to plunder other men?’
巨人的模樣以及說話的方式讓他們心驚膽戰(zhàn)，但是奧德賽還是站出來說話，想同人們正常交往的習(xí)俗一樣，他竟然想要和這獨眼巨人有禮物。同時，在最后也不忘說宙斯會佑護(hù)那些可憐的乞者的。
But since we’vechanced on you, we’re at your knees
in hopes of a warmwelcome, even a guest-gift,
the sort that hostsgive strangers. That’s the custom.
Respect the gods, my friend. We’re suppliants—at your mercy!
Zeus of the Strangers guards all guests and suppliants:
strangers are sacred—Zeus will avenge their rights!
但是，誰知這獨眼巨人們并不懼怕宙斯，也不在乎其他諸神，嘲笑奧德賽他們的愚蠢。而當(dāng)局人問道他們的船?？吭谀睦飼r，機(jī)智的奧德賽讓我贊嘆不已，他的反應(yīng)如此的敏捷，回答又是這般得“給力”。
So he laid his trap
but he never caught me, no, wise to the world
I shot back in my crafty way, ‘My ship?
Poseidon god of the earthquake smashed my ship,
he drove it against the rocks at your island’s far cape,
dashed it against a cliff as the winds rode us in.
I and the men you see escaped a sudden death.’
巨人無言以對，只能隨手抓了兩人吃了，其場面之暴力，畫面之血腥。令在場的其他人包括奧德賽震驚，大家都是非常害怕。奧德賽奮戰(zhàn)的熱血燃燒起來，恨不得殺死這個可惡的巨人，但是想到殺死巨人就無法出這個洞穴。
There at a stroke we’d finish off ourselves as well—
how could we with our bare hands heave back
that slab he set to block his cavern’s gaping maw?
奧德賽考慮問題是如此周全，萬般無奈之下，只能等到第二天的來到。然而，清晨到來，巨人的舉止是如此隨意，又是隨手抓了兩人吃了。待巨人離去后，奧德賽開始籌謀他的復(fù)仇之計。
how could I pay him back? would Athena give me glory?
Here was the plan that struck my mind as best …
觀望四周后，奧德賽拾起一根橄欖木，削尖一段，伙同他的戰(zhàn)友們一起將木棒刺入巨人的眼中。傍晚，巨人和往常一樣回來，又是隨手抓了兩人吃了。隱忍內(nèi)心的憤怒，奧德賽開始他的計劃，引誘巨人品嘗美酒，雖說是希望巨人能夠送他們回家，但奧德賽也知無用，而且他的目的也不在于此。巨人又一次欺騙他，并且詢問他的名字，奧德賽告訴他自己是“Nobody”，結(jié)果這個巨人真信了。喝罷酒，巨人睡去了。待到時機(jī)到來，奧德賽和他的戰(zhàn)友們開始計劃，費了很大功夫才將得以成功。巨人被刺傷了眼睛，喚來他的同伴來幫他復(fù)仇?？山Y(jié)果由于巨人的回答，伙伴們都以為他遭到了宙斯的懲罰，便沒有予以理會。
‘Nobody, friends’—Polyphemus bellowed back from his cave—
‘Nobody’s killing me now by fraud and not by force.’‘
讀到此處，方知奧德賽當(dāng)初喚自己為“Nobody”的用意，可見其睿智、機(jī)警。
既然已經(jīng)刺瞎了巨人，接下來想著怎么逃離這個洞穴呢？機(jī)智的奧德賽又有了好主意，就是藏在這些公羊下面。第二天早上，他們依計劃行事。但奧德賽藏在領(lǐng)頭羊下，卻引起了巨人的注意。不料，在出去的時候，奧德賽掉落下來，落在伙伴的后面。為了同伴們的安全，奧德賽再一次挑釁巨人。
So, Cyclops, no weak coward it was whose crew
you bent to devour there in your vaulted cave—.
you with your brute force! Your filthy crimes
came down on your own head, you shameless cannibal,
daring to eat your guests in your own house—
so Zeus and the other gods have paid you back!
被奧德賽激怒，他舉起山峰峭壁，砸入大海，激起浪潮，將船只又打回岸上。戰(zhàn)友紛紛抱怨，但奧德賽內(nèi)心燃燒的血液以及他的怒火壓抑不住自己，其傲慢之舉向巨人說明了自己的身份。最后巨人開始呻吟，想起曾經(jīng)的預(yù)言……奧德賽對于巨人是恨之入骨，殺他之心之堅定。最后巨人向他的父親波塞冬祈禱，要求報復(fù)奧德修斯，將奧德修斯的船吹離了回家的航線。
而波塞冬聽見了他的祈禱，奧德賽一行人又開始回家的征程。奧德賽接下來的旅程定不會一帆風(fēng)順，期待明日的故事發(fā)展。
后記
在這一篇章中，我們看到了一直斗智斗勇的奧德賽。即使有份“安逸”呈現(xiàn)眼前，永遠(yuǎn)堅持那份“回家之心”；即使面對著“吃人不眨眼”的獨眼巨人，他也能和他“坦然”交流；即使在緊張又刺激的氣氛下，依舊保持那份鎮(zhèn)靜，來解決眼前的危機(jī)。
然而，奧德賽這樣的英雄，也有自己的“驕傲”，他也想自己能夠聲名遠(yuǎn)揚，所以告訴了巨人真名，招致海神波塞冬的重重阻撓，可謂回家之路艱難重重。
