The Vanishing Glass(消失的玻璃）
轉(zhuǎn)眼間，哈利在阿姨家住過了十個年頭，但是Private Drive街區(qū)依舊，沒什么變化。
The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys’ front door;it crept into their living-room，which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr Dursley had seen that fateful news about the owls.
Only photographs on the mantelpiece really show how much time had passed.
通過太陽升起這個場景的描寫以及壁櫥上照片的景物描寫，一幅生活場景馬上被勾勒出來。太陽緩緩升起，日光照在Dursleys家門前的草坪上，連門上的門牌號也被照的發(fā)光，一切都如此一樣又平靜，只有屋里壁櫥上的照片能顯示這十年過去的痕跡。
小時候Dudley長什么樣呢？
There had been lots of pictures of what’s looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-colored bobble hats-but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large,blond boy riding his first bicycle,on a roundabout at the fair,playing computer game with his father,being hugged and kissed by his mother.
Dudley looked a lot like Uncle Vernon.He had a large,pink face,not much neck,small,watery blue eyes and thick,blond hair that lay smoothly on his thick,fat head.
胖胖的Dudley，長得好看但脾氣真的是火爆，都是被爸媽慣壞的。
看到禮物有36個，少了兩個，看他的反應(yīng)：
“All right，thirty-seven then,”said Dudley,going red in the face.Harry, who could see a huge Dudley tantrum coming on,began wolfing down his bacon as fast as possible in case Dudley turned the table over.
Aunt Petunia obviously scented danger.
當(dāng)聽到媽媽說再給他買兩個的時候，他就瞬間開心起來,開始拆禮物：
“Oh.”Dudley sat down heavily and grabbed the nearest parcel（包裹），ripped the paper off (拆快遞）a gold wristwatch.
這樣的表現(xiàn)還得到了爸爸的夸獎,真的蠢的什么都能夸，什么都是優(yōu)點(diǎn)：
“Little tyke wants his money’s worth,just like his father.Atta boy, Dudley!”He ruffled Dudley’s hair.
那我們的主人公哈利呢？
The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house,too.
哈利的姨媽聲音總是那么的刻薄，你看新的一天就是這樣開始的：
Her shrill voice which made the first noise of the day.She rapped on the door again with screeched.“Are you up yet?”She demanded.
demand 這種用法還是第一次看到，之前都是說需求，比如說我國是人口大國，對糧食，石油等資源有大量的需求。
“Nearly”，said Harry。（有一種放假在家被媽媽三番五次喊起床的即視感，馬上就能體驗(yàn)到了朋友們）
Harry groaned.(小聲咕噥，也作呻吟）
沒辦法，哈利是個受氣桶。你看他住的環(huán)境：
Harry got slowly out of bed and started looking for socks. He found a pair under his bed and,after pulling a spider off one of them,put them on.Harry was used to spiders,because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them,and that was where he slept.
樓梯間下邊的小黑屋，是的你沒看錯。還經(jīng)常作為受氣包，被Dudley揍。不過哈利還是有機(jī)會去上學(xué)，這是唯一一件好事吧，除了下邊要講到的意外，哈利今年可以跟他們一起給Dudley過生日。
看看可惡的Dudley：
Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mister to Harry,as Dudley was very fat and hated exercise-unless of course it involved punching somebody.Dudley’s favourite punch-bag was Harry.
我們的哈利也很機(jī)靈,也弱小的可憐人：
But he could often catch him.He didn’t look it,but he was very fast.Perhaps it had something to do with living in a dark cupboard,but Harry had always been small and skinny for his age.
現(xiàn)在的小哈利長什么樣了呢？
Harry had a thin face,knobby knees（怎么翻譯呢？）,black hair and brighten-green eyes.He wore round glasses held together with a lot of Sellotape because of all the times Dudley had punched him on the nose.The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his forehead which was shaped like a bolt of lightening.
哈利從被叫醒開始他的一天，他翻了個身(還記得上一節(jié)Dursley先生翻身嘛？turn over）想記住昨天的好夢：
He rolled on to his back and tried to remember the dream he had been having.It had been a good one.There had been a flying motorbike in it.He had a funny feeling he’d had the same dream before.
其實(shí)他早就體驗(yàn)過，還記得第一節(jié)海格騎著能飛的摩托把哈利送到這里來嗎？（感覺以前做過這個夢，你在生活中是不是也經(jīng)常遇到這種事，用起來這句話）
吃點(diǎn)飯要出發(fā)去動物園了！
Harry put the plates of egg and bacon on the table,which was difficult as there wasn’t much room.
Petunia came back from the telephone,looking both angry and worried.
為什么這么憤怒呢？
“She can’t take him.”She jerked her head in Harry’s direction,looked furiously at Harry as though he’d planned this.
因?yàn)榕笥褯]辦法幫忙看Harry ，大家都什么反應(yīng)呢？
Dudley’s mouth fell open in horror but Harry’s heart gave a leap.
他們展開了激烈的討論，完全忽視哈利的存在：
The Dursleys often spoke about Harry like this, as though he wasn’t there - or rather,as though he was something very nasty that couldn’t understand them,like a slug(鼻涕蟲）.
其實(shí)哈利自己只想：
Harry put in hopefully(he’d be able to watch what he wanted on television for a change and maybe even have a go on Dudley’s computer).
看看電視，玩玩電腦。
哈利的阿姨什么反應(yīng)呢？
Aunt Petunia looked as though she’d just swallowed a lemon.
“And come back and find the house in ruins?”She snarled.
阿姨提出讓Harry留在車?yán)?，Dudley不愿意了：
“That car’s new,he’s not sitting in it alone...”
然后通過小伎倆實(shí)現(xiàn)自己的愿望：
Dudley began to cry loudly.In fact,he wasn’t really crying,it had been years since he’d really cried,but he knew that if he screwed up his face and wailed,his mother would give him anything he wanted.
包括后邊的假裝抽泣：Dudley yelled between huge pretend sobs.
然后又沖Harry壞笑：He shot Harry a nasty grin through the gap in his mother’s arms.
然后他的媽媽就說，我不會讓他把你的生日毀掉的：用spoil來表示毀掉，又得到了一個新的用法，以前只是用來表示寵溺、溺愛的意思。
不過最后Harry還是跟他們一塊去動物園了，雖然在這之前被叔叔警告了：
“I’m warning you.’He had said,putting his large purple face right up close to Harry’s,“I’m warning you now,boy-any funny business,anything at all-and you’ll be in that cupboard from now until Christmas.”

It was cool and dark in here, with lit windows all along the walls.Behind the glasses,all sorts of lizards and snakes were crawling and slithering over bits of wood and stone.(在木頭和石頭的間隙）
Dudley看的時候這個樣子，但蛇不理他：
Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass,staring at the glistening brown coils.
其實(shí)對蛇的描寫很生動：The snake jerked its head towards Uncle Vernon and Dudley,then raised its eyes to the ceiling.It gave Harry a look that said quite plainly:’I get that all the time.’
The snake jabbed(刺，戳，猛擊） it’s tail at a little sign next to the glass. Harry peered at it（帶點(diǎn)疑惑，疑問的盯著看）.
最后玻璃消失了：
Harry sat up and gasped;the glass front of the boa constrictor’s tank had vanished.The great snake was uncoiling itself rapidly,slithering out on to the floor-people throughout the reptile house screamed and started running for the exits.

敲玻璃 tap on the glass (敲玻璃，想把蛇喚醒，游客?。。﹔ap? the glass smartly with his knuckles.
但蛇繼續(xù)打盹 snooze on
Dudley很失望，于是哼哼唧唧moan，shuffled away，拖著步子失望的離開。再來復(fù)習(xí)一下Harry的小聲咕噥：groan. Harry 和蛇說話的時候小心翼翼地咕噥，murmur
nod vigorously 表示很贊同的點(diǎn)頭
whin sb （當(dāng)想讓你爸媽買零食的時候，可以用whin）I want the toy,he whined his father.
look intently at 認(rèn)真的看

在什么的那一秒：The weirdest thing about all these people was the way seemed to vanish the second Harry tried to get a closer look.
