■原文：宋徽宗在位時，廣收古書畫，網(wǎng)羅畫家，擴充翰林圖畫院，將畫家的地位提到中國歷史上最高的位置。
■參考譯文：When he (Emperor Huizong) was on the throne, he collected not only voluminous ancient paintings and calligraphic works, but also a legion of painters to expand the painting school of the Imperail Academy, elevating the painter’s status to the highest level in the?history of China.
簡書語言翻譯主編南下的夏天解析
我們來簡要解析一下哈，今天練習的文本其實并不難。主要的翻譯技巧是省略譯法。而語言點知識則是ing分詞的修飾作用。
? 第一，先來看“在位時”的處理，參考譯文用的是“on the throne” ，throne的含義是“[sing] royal authority or power 王權; 王位; 帝位；例如：Queen Elizabeth II succeeded to the throne in 1952.”
那么這里我們還可以用哪些詞匯來表達呢？比如reign就是一個很好的詞語，這個詞語既可以是名詞也可以是動詞。
名詞的含義是“ (period of) rule of a king or queen 君主的統(tǒng)治; 君主統(tǒng)治時期；具體到今天的練習中，我們可以這樣說， in/during the reign of Emperor Huizong ”
動詞（不及物）的含義則是， “(over sb/sth) ?be king, queen or regent; rule ；成為國君或攝政王; 當政; 統(tǒng)治；例如：reign over the country，那么今天的練習我們可以這樣說，When he reigned over the country.
?假如考試中完全想不出來throne，reign這種詞匯，使用rule，govern也是可以接受的。
? 第二，我們來看“廣收古書畫，網(wǎng)羅畫家”的處理，我們之前見過翻譯中的省略譯法，其中有一種省略就是同義省略，我們可以看到“廣收、網(wǎng)羅”的意涵相近，所以譯文的處理是“he collected not only voluminous ancient paintings and calligraphic works, but also a legion of painters……”，“a legion of painters”前面并無動詞。
?也許有同學疑問，對于畫家用collect這個詞匯是否合適，是不是用hire或者recruit要好一點。
其實，這里用collect更好一些，因為我們大家都知道在封建帝國，“率土之濱，莫非王臣”，而recruit的含義是“to find new people to work in a company, join an organization, do a job etc”，所以用collect更傳神一些。
這里再注意一個單詞，legion，如果喜歡美劇的同學一定會認識這個詞，因為最近有一部大熱的X戰(zhàn)警題材美劇《大群》，英文名就是這個單詞。
Legion這個單詞的本意是，battle unit of the ancient Roman army 古羅馬軍團；例如， Caesar's legions 凱撒軍團。
也可以指 ?special military unit, esp of volunteers serving in the army of another country ；特殊軍團; （尤指志愿服務於他國軍隊中的）外籍軍團。
? 引申義就是參考譯文中的含義， large number of people 大批的人；例如，This new film will please his legions of admirers.
Legion還可以用于表語，含義是very many; numerous 極多; 大批；比如我們翻譯罪行罄竹難書，就可以這樣表達—Their crimes are legion. 他們的罪行罄竹難書。
? 大家還要注意一下legion的宗教含義，《圣經(jīng)》之《馬可福音》第五章第9節(jié)中有這樣一段故事：耶穌遇見一個被“污鬼”附身的人，耶穌問那個污鬼叫什么名字，污鬼說我們叫“群（Legion）”，因為我們數(shù)量很多。大家可以讀一下選段：
5:1 他們來到海邊，格拉森人的地方。
And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.
5:2 耶穌一下船，就有一個被污鬼咐著的人，從墳塋里出來迎著他。
And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,
5:3 那人常住在墳塋里，沒有人能捆住他，就是用鐵鏈也不能。
Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:
5:4 因為人屢次用腳鐐和鐵鏈捆鎖他，鐵鏈竟被他掙斷了，腳鐐也被他弄碎了?？倹]有人能制伏他。
Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.
5:5 他晝夜常在墳塋里和山中喊叫，又用石頭砍自己。
And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.
5:6 他遠遠的看見耶穌，就跑過去拜他。
But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,
5:7 大聲呼叫說，至高神的兒子耶穌，我與你有什么相干。我指著神懇求你，不要叫我受苦。
And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.
5:8 是因耶穌曾吩咐他說，污鬼阿，從這人身上出來吧。
For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.
5:9 耶穌問他說，你名叫什么?；卮鹫f，我名叫群，因為我們多的緣故。
And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many.
?第三，我們來看一處很有意思的處理，“廣收古書畫”，參考譯文處理成，“he collected ……voluminous ancient paintings and calligraphic works”
我們可以看到“廣”原本是副詞來修飾“收”這個動詞，但是譯文的處理則用“voluminous”這個形容詞做定語來修飾“古書畫”，從而表達“廣收”的含義。
?這種處理方法在翻譯理論中被稱為轉(zhuǎn)性譯法，即根據(jù)譯文語言的習慣進行詞性轉(zhuǎn)換，我們來看幾個例子：
● 英譯中——Vietnamese war is a drain on American resources. 越南戰(zhàn)爭消耗著美國的資源。這里就是 drain 轉(zhuǎn)譯為動詞 消耗
Millions of the people in the mountain areas are finally off the poverty. 千百萬山區(qū)人終于擺脫了貧窮。這里就是介詞off轉(zhuǎn)譯為動詞 擺脫。
● 英譯中——Vietnamese war is a drain on American resources. 越南戰(zhàn)爭消耗著美國的資源。這里就是 drain 轉(zhuǎn)譯為動詞 消耗
Millions of the people in the mountain areas are finally off the poverty. 千百萬山區(qū)人終于擺脫了貧窮。這里就是介詞off轉(zhuǎn)譯為動詞 擺脫。
● 中譯英——他總是喝很多酒。He is a greater drinker. 動詞轉(zhuǎn)為名詞。
許多學生反對他。Many students are against him. 這里就是動詞 ?反對，轉(zhuǎn)譯成介詞 against
?第四，我們要注意一下翰林圖畫院的處理，大家都知道宋朝的翰林院相當于皇家的顧問機構（也稱翰林學士院），起草朝廷的制誥、敕令、國書、文書等，所以用imperial academy。
但是唐宋除卻翰林學士院，還有專掌方術伎藝供奉等的翰林院，例如原文中的翰林圖畫院，所以參考譯文會處理成，the painting school of the Imperail Academy.
? 第五，我們要注意elevating the painter’s status to the highest level in thehistory of China這句中elevating作為ing分詞的修飾作用。
? 要注意一下status的兩種含義，一種大家都很熟悉，意思是 person's social, legal or professional position or rank in relation to others 地位; 身分; 職位；
另一個意思則是，high rank or social position 重要地位; 重要身分；例如，He's very aware of his status. 他很在意自己的重要身分。
詞組status symbol 的含義則是，possession that is thought to show sb's high social rank, wealth, etc 社會地位﹑ 身分﹑ 財富等的象征，，例如， He only bought the yacht as a status symbol he hates sailing. 他買游艇只是為了顯示身分。
?? 關于宋徽宗提升畫家地位，這里補充一個典故吧，在我國古代，畫家的社會地位并不高，我們可以看一看《舊唐書.閻立本傳》中的記載。
大家應該知道閻立本是唐朝著名政治家、畫家，出身貴族，官至右相。但史書中卻這樣記載：
太宗嘗與侍臣學士泛舟于春苑，池中有異鳥，隨波容與。太宗擊賞，數(shù)詔座者為詠，召立本令寫焉。時閣外傳呼云：“畫師閻立本?！睍r已為主爵郎中，奔走流汗，俯伏池側(cè)，手揮丹粉，瞻望座賓，不勝愧赧。退誡其子曰：“吾少好讀書，幸免面墻，緣情染翰，頗及儕流。唯以丹青見知，躬廝役之務，辱莫大焉！汝宜深誡，勿習此末伎?！绷⒈緸樾运茫T不能也。及為右相，與左相姜恪對掌樞密。恪既歷任將軍，立功塞外；立本唯善于圖畫，非宰輔之器。故時人以《千字文》為語曰：“左相宣威沙漠，右相馳譽丹青。”
大家可以看到史書是對閻立本的畫技持一種譏刺的態(tài)度，大意就是說閻立本憑借即所謂丹青繪畫類的“末伎”獲得高位，沒有什么宰相的才華，不能和以威威軍功得任左相的姜恪相提并論，于是被嘲諷道，“左相宣威沙漠，右相馳譽丹青?！?/p>
由這段史實，古代畫家的地位之低可見一斑（畢竟官至右相的畫家，都會受到這樣的不公評價呵?。?/p>

第二，好的譯文必須仰賴良好的中文與文化功底，像今天練習的譯文，雖然很短，但是如果對有關背景知識不了解，自然很難翻譯準確。

1）Song Huizong應該為Emperor Huizong，對emperor這個單詞掌握不熟練。
2）書法作品應該為calligraphic works，calligraphy只能當作抽象的藝術或者精致書法作品的總稱。
3）網(wǎng)羅應該為collect，有“率土之濱，莫非王臣”之感，recruit則是以招募員工的意思為主。
4）翰林圖畫院翻譯為the painting school of the Imperial Academy較為妥當，imperial art academy有失偏頗，不能把翰林院和翰林圖畫院的關系表達出來。詳情請參考夏神的解釋。
5）地位提高應該為elevate，用improve不精確。
6）人的社會地位應該是status，position是指職位。
7）地位最高翻譯為highest level，筆者將level漏掉了。
翻譯復盤總結
1.首次進行中翻英，理論和實踐準備不足，下次找一本中翻英的教材進行學習。
2.翻譯的時候不求甚解，沒有查詞典，就隨意寫出答案。
3.對于夏神解析中提到的省略、轉(zhuǎn)譯等翻譯技巧，沒有概念，導致譯文生硬無趣。
