This is a novel that sings-- from death dirge(挽歌) to jubilant chorus (歡呼的)of freedom. It is, in the end, remarkable.

小說里的兩個女主角Mariam&Laila,素不相識的兩個人卻因為阿富汗的多妻制，相識，相知，相惜以及最后Mariam用生命給Laila換取的幸福。

Mariam的父親因為身份地位的關系而拋棄了即將臨產(chǎn)的Mariam的母親，而她一生下來就成了私生女。雖然她的父親是當?shù)匾煌梁?，兒他們依然住在郊區(qū)的山上。母親自殺后Mariam在她的繼母們的逼迫下遠嫁一個鞋匠，當時的她只有15,而她的丈夫45。十幾年的操勞由于各種原因，流產(chǎn)，最終也失去了丈夫的愛和耐心。經(jīng)常遭暴打，而她都默默的忍受著。她是個溫和聽話的妻子。后來Laila由于戰(zhàn)爭父母雙亡，無奈之下嫁給了Mariam的丈夫Rasheed. 當時她才14,Rasheed將近60歲。兩個妻子之間雖有矛盾一開始，但是后來成為了親密無間的如同母女一般的關系。以至于后來Mariam為了救要被Rasheed打死的Laila時候決定殺死他們的丈夫，并且甘愿承擔一切罪責，以此來造就了Laila后來的幸福生活。

Mariam是個可憐的女人，從生下來的那天就沒有被愛過。當他感受到Laila的女兒Aziza對她的愛的時候，熱淚盈眶。

Love had never been declared to her so guilelessly, so unreservedly .Aziz made marine want to weep.

對Mariam最好的詮釋就是文中這一段話:

In a few years, this girl will be a woman who will make small demands on life, who will never burden others, who will never let on that she also has had sorrows ,disappointments, dreams that have been ridiculed. A woman will be like a rock in a riverbed, enduring without complaint, her grace not be sullied but shaped by the turbulence that washed over her. Already Laila sees something behind this young girl's eyes. Something deep in her core that neither Rasheed nor Taliban will be able to break, something as hard and unyielding as a? block of limestone. Something that. In the end, will be her undoing and Laila's salvation.

她的悲劇在于阿富汗的重男輕女，戰(zhàn)爭，多妻制，早婚，貧窮。

看后，心情五味雜陳，幸虧Laila幸福的活下去了，不然又該唏噓難受了。詞窮，無法表達所感，親自去看吧。
