第九章前兩句光看文言文會很難理解，但是英譯本就非常簡潔易懂。這里老子強調(diào)了物極必反的道理，因此人們做事應該留有余地。能夠做到功成身退的人，他的智慧就和“道”契合了。

九章

　　持而盈之，不如其已。揣而銳之，不可長保。金玉滿堂，莫之能守。富貴而驕，自遺其咎。功遂身退，天下之道。

　Stretch (a bow) to the very full, and you will wish you had stopped in time.?Temper a (sword-edge) to its very sharpest,?and the edge will not last long.?When gold and jade fill your hall,?you will not be able to keep them safe.?To be proud with wealth and honor is to sow seeds of one's own downfall.?Retire when your work is done,?such is Heaven's way. 如果把一張弓拉滿，你會希望能及時停下來（譯者注：拉滿弓非常費力）。如果加強寶劍的劍刃到最鋒利的狀態(tài)，這種鋒利不能長時間持續(xù)（譯者注：再快的刀也會鈍）。把金銀首飾堆滿你的家，你沒法保證它們不會被偷。因為財富和榮譽而自豪，他就種下了個人潰敗的種子。取得成功后隱退，這才是天道。
