Grendel script
Characters: Grendel, the bulls, his mom, people, the king, the shaper
【The first scene】
Narrator: Once upon a time, there was a monster called Grendel, and one day, when he was playing outside,he caught his foot in the crack where two old tree trunks joined, and he asked his mom for help.
Grendel(crying): Oops! Mama! Where are you? I need you!
Narrator: However, he shouted loudly and waited for a long time, there was still no his mom's trace. He was finally heartbroken.
Grendel(crazy): Oh! I'm going to die! Poor Mama, Poor Grendel! Wahhhhhhh......
Please...Mama...Help me....
Narrator: And then, Grendel saw a new-born bull standing thirty feet away, it was staring at him. He shouted, and after that, an adult bull came to protect the younger one. It use itshorns to attract Grendel, this made Grendel crazy.
Grendel(angry&crazy): Why? Why the adult bull protect the baby bull even if they don't know that the calves are theirs? But where is my mom?
Narrator: Such a poor Grendel, the adult bull attracted him again and again, this made Grendel fainted......
Analysis: In this scene, Grendel's personality changed a lot because of his mom and the bulls. Firstly it was his mom didn't come to help him that made he felt very sad and next, the action of adult bull protects baby bull in sharp contrast to his mother. This produced a big influence of him and made him feel disappointed.
【The second scene】
Narrator: When Grendel finally woke up, the time had already paced deep into night. Then, he saw men for the first time. They were standing around him and talking about him. He felt strange that he can understand what they are talking about.
One of the people: Hey, guys, look! It's awake!
Another one: Yes, it likes... Hmmm... likes a growth of some kind, some beastlike fungus!
The King: He seems to be hungry, my soldiers, bring six pigs for it to eat!
People: Yes, your majesty.
Grendel: Pigs!
Narrator: However, Grendel didn't like pigs very much, so he cried. Unfortunately, the voice scared people a lot because they just seemed this as a roar which is make by the bad monster.
The King(scared): Oh no, what a terrible sound! It must be a monster! Soldiers, use your sword to kill it! It is kind of evil and dangerous creature! Be quick, kill it!
Grendel(a little bit excited): No, I just don't like pigs. I want to be your friends! Please don't!
The King(afraid): Listening, it said something else. It must be curse! We should kill it as fast as we can! My soldiers, be brave and be quick!!!
Narrator: And the King's soldiers all took out their swords in order to kill Grendel, Grendel felt hopeless, he stopped struggling and waited for the death. Just then, Grendel smelled a taste of blood. It was his mother came to save him. She scared away all the people and brought Grendel home. Grendel was so excited about the experience this time, he shared the story with his mom all the way. However, his mom just walked and say nothing like she used to. This made Grendel feel very disappointed. He stopped talking.
Analysis: In this scene, Grendel met people for the first time. He really wants to make friends with them, but what is sad is that he was betrayed. What's more, although Grendel's mom came to save him in the end, she didn't care about Grendel at all. We can feel Grendel's loneliness and his wishes to be loved by anyone. He just wants to get other's attention, even a little bit is enough. But nobody understand him, even if his mom.
【The third scene】
Narrator: Grendel likes watching from a high tree on the top of the mountain in a mead hall and watch the kingdom and the people at the foot of the mountain. Inside the hall he could hear the Shaper telling about the glorious deeds of dead kings, his harp mimicking the rush of swords, clanging boldly with the noble speeches.
The Shaper(full of emotion): The dead kings, they split certain heads, snuck away with certain precious swords and necklaces. They were so brave and powerful that they became the king of the country.
People: Yes, we are so heroic, so brave!
Grendel: What a beautiful story! I love it! The things shaper said seemed true.
Narrator: Although shaper is telling something wrong with the truth, people are still willing to believe them because they are heroes in this story. And also, the Grendel, he wants to believe them because they are so attractive.
The shaper(exciting):There was an ancient feud between two brothers, there also appeared a monster called Grendel, it kills people, lots of people. It was on the dark side, the terrible race God cursed. However, the Kings were so brave to fight with it, there began wars between countries. Only you, the bravest people survived！
People: We are the best, we are the most poweful in the world!
Grendel(fascinated): I believed him. Such was the power of the Shaper's harp! What a conversion story!
Narrator: Grendel stood there, wriggling his face, tears down his nose, grinding his fists into his streaming eyes, even though he knew the story isn't true that niether the brothers had lived, nor the God who judged them, he was still deeply moved.
Analysis: We will feel strange about Grendel because he was be told as a bad guy in Shaper's story. However, he was still obviously fascinated by this, he is so exciting that he can be part of the story which is told by the Shaper. And the reason behind this maybe is that he really want to get people's attention, even if he is a evil character in the story. Grendel was ignored by almost everyone even his mom, so he is lonely and looking for his life's meaning all the time. In Shaper's story, he had been mentioned. It means, he has the meaning of existence. That's why he likes the story.
So, as for the answer to the question about Grendel's conflicted nature. We think is that he wanted to get attention from others but don't know how. And he has been searching for the meaning of his existence.
