Instagram的名稱取自“即時”（英語：instant）與“電報”（英語：telegram）兩個單詞的結(jié)合。因為創(chuàng)始人靈感來自即時成像相機，且認(rèn)為人與人之間的照片分享“就像用電線傳遞電報消息”，因而將兩個單詞結(jié)合成軟件名稱。Instagram的一個顯著的特點是，用它拍攝的照片為正方形，類似寶麗來即時成像相機拍攝的效果，而通常所使用的移動設(shè)備的相機的縱橫比為4:3和16:9。
