At the time, Buddhism was growing in popularity in China. Emperor Ming of Han, a supporter of Buddhism, noticed that the Buddhist monks lit lanterns on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month.

Ming ordered all temples, homes and the imperial palaces to light lanterns on that particular evening, starting a folk custom that's lasted for centuries.
