New York City: It's a cold day in December. A little boy about 10-year-old was standing before a shoe store on Broadway（百腦匯）, barefooted（光著腳）, peering（凝視） through the window, and shivering with cold.
故事發(fā)生在紐約市：十二月的一天，天氣寒冷。一個(gè)約莫十歲大的小男孩站在百老匯一家鞋店門(mén)口，光著腳，隔著玻璃窗向內(nèi)張望，渾身冷得瑟瑟發(fā)抖。
A lady approached the boy and said, “My little fellow, why are you looking so earnestly（認(rèn)真的） in that window?” “I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,” was the boy's reply.
一位女士走過(guò)來(lái)問(wèn)：“小朋友，那玻璃窗里有什么呀？你看得那么入迷？” “我在請(qǐng)求上帝賜給我一雙鞋?！毙∧泻⒒卮稹?/p>
The lady took him by the hand and went into the store, and asked the clerk to get a half dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her.
女士拉著他的手走進(jìn)店內(nèi)，讓店員給小男孩拿來(lái)六雙襪子。然后又問(wèn)店員要了一盆水和一塊毛巾。店員很快拿了來(lái)。
She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with a towel.
女士領(lǐng)著小家伙到了柜臺(tái)后面，自己脫掉手套，跪在地上，親手給孩子洗腳，又用毛巾把他的小腳丫擦干。
By this time the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she then purchased him a pair of shoes, and tying up the remaining pairs of socks, gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, “No doubt, my little fellow, you feel more comfortable now?”
這時(shí)，店員拿來(lái)了襪子。女士先給小男孩穿上一雙襪子，然后又買(mǎi)了一雙鞋。還把剩下幾雙襪子綁在一起，一并送給了他。她拍了拍男孩的頭，說(shuō)道：“怎么樣，小伙子，這下舒服多了吧？”
As she turned to go, the astonished lad caught her by the hand, and looking up in her face, with tears in his eyes, answered the question with these words: “Are you God's wife?”
小男孩被眼前的這一切驚呆了。就在女士轉(zhuǎn)身離開(kāi)的時(shí)候，男孩抓著她的手，仰頭看著她的臉，淚眼汪汪地回答著剛才的問(wèn)題：“您是上帝的太太嗎？”
百老匯(Broadway)，原意為“寬闊的街”，實(shí)為紐約市重要的南北向道路，縱貫曼哈頓島。由于此路兩旁分布著為數(shù)眾多的劇院，是美國(guó)戲劇和音樂(lè)劇的重要發(fā)源地，“百老匯”因此成為音樂(lè)劇的代名詞。每年多達(dá)幾百萬(wàn)的來(lái)自世界各地的游客前往欣賞歌舞劇。它是西方戲劇行業(yè)的一個(gè)巔峰代表，代表著最高級(jí)別的藝術(shù)成就和商業(yè)成就。
