Reading Time: 1min read

Georgia is today celebrating the 77th anniversary of the victory over the Nazi Germany by allied forces in World War II.

On this occassion, the Tbilisi City Hall has provided financial assistance to World War II veterans and family members of deceased servicemembers.

The City Hall has handed out one-time financial assistance to them, in particular: GEL 1,000 to 84 veterans, while 46 family members of deceased servicemembers have received GEL 500.

The Victory Day was traditionally celebrated in Vake Park in Tbilisi, however, due to the ongoing rehabilitation in the park, Tbilisi City Hall offers veterans a gathering in the Kikvidze Park.

Representatives of the Georgian Government plan to go to the Kikvidze Park today.

World War II went down in history as the largest and bloodiest conflict. The war lasted from 1941 to 1945. The battles took place in the territory of 40 states. It resulted in 70 to 85 million fatalities, a majority being civilians. Tens of millions of people died due to genocides (including the Holocaust), starvation, massacres, and disease. In the wake of the Axis defeat, Germany and Japan were occupied, and war crimes tribunals were conducted against German and Japanese leaders.

Up to 700,000 Georgians served in WWII and nearly 400,000 died.

Of these 700,000 people, 224,000 received different awards while 164 were given the title of hero.
