在Pemberley House里，Elizabeth又開始幻想自己本來可以當(dāng)這里的女主人的，還可以邀請自己的親戚到這里來做客。不過她馬上轉(zhuǎn)念一想，覺得Darcy肯定不會讓她邀請親戚來做客，她要是嫁給他肯定連親戚的面都見不著了。幸虧這樣想，她才沒有后悔當(dāng)初拒絕Darcy求婚的事。
mistress這個詞在這里是“女主人”的意思，而不是“情婦”。這個詞最早源于法語，法語中男性掌權(quán)者或者說男主人叫做ma?tre，與之相對應(yīng)的女性就叫做ma?tresse，也就是英語中的mistress這個詞，用以表示“a woman having control or authority”。后來這個詞開始用在兩性關(guān)系之間，用來形容一個女人能控制和影響男人的心，所以慢慢地就演變出“愛人”，甚至是“情婦”的含義。
