Lesson 53 Hot snake

At last firemen have put out a big forest fire in California. Since then, they have been trying to find out how the fire began. Forest fire are often caused by broken glass or by cigarette ends which people carelessly throw away. Yesterday the firemen examined the ground carefully, but were not able to find any broken glass. They were also quite sure that a cigarette end did not start the fire. This morning, however, a fireman accidentally discovered the cause. He noticed the remains of a snake which was wound round the electric wires of a 16,000-volt power line. In this way, he was able to solve the mystery. The explanation was simple but very unusual. A bird had snatched up the snake from the ground and then dropped it on to the wires. The snake then wound itself round the wires. When it did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these immediately started a fire.

From A Fireman's View:

We have finally put out a large forest fire in California. Since then, we have been trying to find out how the fire began. A forest fire is usally caused by broken glass or a cigarret end which people carelessly throw away. We examined the ground yesterday. We didn't found any broken glass. And we don't think a cigarret started the fire. This morning, I noticed the remains of a snake wound aroud the wire line. How could it climb so high? I noticed the power line is 16,000 volt. It might genereate spark and the spark would start the forest fire if the snake touched such a high voltage power line. So we guessed that a bird had snatched the snake up from the groud and dropped it on to the wires. Then the generated spark was sent down to the ground and caused the fire. The mystery have finally been solved.

From A Witness View:

I wasn't able to stop being frighten even though a week have passed. That day, I walked through the forest in California. Then I met a snake twenty feets away from me. It was crawling towards me when it saw me. I was so scared that my two feet was shivering and I was not able to ran away. Suddenly an eagle flew and snatched the snake up to the sky. The snake struggled so hard that it managed to shake off from the eangle's talons. But unfortunely, the snake dropped on to a high pressure power line. As soon as it touched the 16,000 volt wire line, sparks generated and were sent down to the ground and caused a fire. Soon, the fire became a large forest fire. It took me two hours in running to escape from the large fire.
