How Women Were Treated with No Respect
Being in low status in the 19th century, women had no power for themselves and they were expected to behave in a certain way. At the time, women were treated with no respect, they were seen as objects that belong to their husbands. They were isolated and treated like unreliable babies, and finally lose their independence and the ability to think.
Women were seen as accessories to their husbands. When they got the mansion as a resting place for her, the narrator said to her husband with great confidence that the house was haunted, but the husband didn’t seem to agree with her. “John laughs at me, of course, one expects that in a marriage.” (Perkins Gilman 1982). It is obvious that the narrator puts herself in the position of obeying her husband, even when he does not respect her thoughts, she thinks it is normal to be that way, what happened was in her expectation. It shows that the narrator is a virgin archetype, she is innocent and sexually vulnerable, and she fits the role of a traditional women who does what they are expected to do. The husband treats her like an unreliable person, he thinks what she said was only funny but has nothing to do with reality. Being “mocked” by her husband,? she does not have the slightest feeling of fighting back.
She was always lying down and having the tonics and other things that her husband gives her as a part of treatment, she feel love from him and? wanted to talk to him about visiting her cousins. “But he said I wasn’t able to go, nor able to stand it after I got there; and I did not make out a very good case for myself, for I was crying before I had finished.” (Perkins Gilman 1892). From this quote, it is clear that the narrator has lost her independence, she believes whatever her husband says, even it is about her own feeling. It gives the readers an image of the isolation of the narrator, which keep her alone and away from other people. She can’t go anywhere without her husband permission, she has became like a baby who depends on others about everything, and blames herself for her request being refused, convinced that it is her own fault. The husband, in this case, is a powerful male figure. He believe that himself is always correct, and that he knows exactly what his wife feels. He controls her with everything, and is convinced that this is the way to love his wife. He does not believe the narrator, thinks of her as a baby who depends on him and that she is unreliable. Being treated like this eventually turned her into what he believes she was like. It is not because women are unreliable, it is because she was treated to be dependent and obedient, so they end up being virgins and lose independence, becoming belongings to their husbands.
Women were objectified and were expected to believe and obey their husbands at all times. Their feelings and thinkings were decided by the husbands, they cannot go anywhere or do anything without permission. Women were unreliable, vulnerable and isolated from the world, they had the least respect from men for they were not seem as human but objects that belong to their husbands. However, it is actually the way they were treated that resulted in women’s dependence.
