BLIGH HOUSE

布萊的房子

To the West,in riding past the walls of Bligh, I remember an incident in the well-known siege of that house, during the Civil Wars:

我騎馬西行經(jīng)過布萊的圍墻，想起內(nèi)戰(zhàn)期間，在對那所房子的那次著名圍攻中發(fā)生的一件事：

沃勒的圓顱黨軍隊(duì)里有一個(gè)年輕的學(xué)者，他是詩人，熱愛給予詩人靈感的繆斯女神，他認(rèn)為自己是為了古老的自由而戰(zhàn)。

who, one day, when the siege was being more hotly urged, pressing forward and climbing a wall, suddenly found himself in a quiet garden by the house. And here, for a time forgetting, as it would seem, the battle, and heedless of the bullets that now and then flew past him like peevish wasps,?

圍攻愈發(fā)激烈，戰(zhàn)事愈發(fā)緊張，有一天，他快步向前，爬上了墻，忽然發(fā)現(xiàn)自己身處房子旁邊一座安靜的花園里。在這里,他仿佛一時(shí)間忘記了戰(zhàn)爭，全然不顧那些像狂躁的黃蜂一樣不時(shí)與他擦身而過的子彈。

the young Officer stayed, gathering roses--old-fashioned damask roses, streaked_ with red and white-which, for the sake of a Court Beauty, there besieged with her father, he carried to the house; falling, however, struck by a chance bullet, or shot perhaps by one of his own party. A few of the young Officer's verses, written in the stilted fashion of the time, and almost and drop-pearls, and a dress of amber-coloured silk.

這位年輕的軍官停留下來,采摘薔薇花——老式的大馬士革薔薇，紅白相間———想獻(xiàn)給一位和她父親一起被圍困的宮廷美人。他拿著花走向房子，然而中途卻倒下了，他不巧被流彈擊中了，也許是被自己的人射殺了。這位年輕軍官的一些詩句被保存下來了，不過那是以當(dāng)時(shí)矯飾的風(fēng)格寫成的，現(xiàn)在的人幾乎已經(jīng)讀不懂了。那位女士的畫像掛在布萊白色的客廳里。畫像已經(jīng)褪色，畫中傻傻笑著的人兒留著卷發(fā)，戴著長形珍珠首飾，穿著一件琥珀色的絲綢裙。
