冬至的由來

在中國，冬至是一個很重要的節(jié)日，這早已成為了一個傳統(tǒng)。早在2500年前，中國人通過觀察太陽測量出了冬至。中國自從古代就對冬至很重視，民間素有"冬至大如年"這樣的說法。那么，你知道冬至的英文怎么說嗎？這一天有什么特殊的呢? 答案是在這一天，北半球白天最短，夜晚最長。

Winter Solstice is an important day in China, it becomes a tradition. More than 2500 years ago, Chinese people had detected this day by measuring the sun. Winter Solstice 冬至

“solstice”的英文解釋是“the time of either the longest day in the year (about June 22) or the shortest day in the year (about December 22)”。意即：一年中最長的一天（大約6月22日）或是一年中最短的一天（大約12月22日）。

因此，這個單詞的用法比較局限，基本只能用來表示節(jié)氣：Winter Solstice冬至，Summer Solstice夏至。

冬至之后是小寒然后是大寒，然后就是春節(jié)了，所以才會有“小寒大寒又一年”的說法

冬至的習俗

在北方，大多數(shù)人吃餃子，然而在南方，人們吃湯圓和水餃。雖然人們以不同的方式在慶祝，但是他們分享同樣的喜悅，家人聚集在一起吃飯。冬至讓家人有機會團圓，年輕人回家，和父母交談，促進了交流。

諺云：“十月一，冬至到，家家戶戶吃水餃?！边@也是為了紀念“醫(yī)圣”張仲景在冬至之時，將驅寒藥材和羊肉用面包成耳朵樣的“嬌耳”分給百姓之事。后人學著“嬌耳”的樣子制作食物，將其叫做“餃子”或“扁食”，冬至吃餃子防凍耳朵的習俗就這樣被沿襲了下來。

------------------小知識--餃子和湯圓的英文說法------------------

很多人用英文說餃子都喜歡用dumpling這個詞，但按照維基百科的定義，dumpling 應該是一個“集大成”的概念：原則上，任何“面皮裹餡兒”的食物都可以叫“dumpling”，比如青團子、餛飩等。所以，用dumpling來表示中國特有的“餃子”就太過牽強了。所以，冬至之日，我們想用英文表達餃子就可以說Chinese dumpling，或者干脆直接用拼音Jiaozi.

【例句】Mother served a piping hot bowl of Chinese dumplings.媽媽端上了一碗熱氣騰騰的餃子。

上面介紹說到“dumpling”可以表示任何“面皮裹餡兒”的食物，因此，向外國人介紹湯圓的時候可以說sweet/soft dumpling。另外根據(jù)湯圓的原料、形狀，英文中也可以說sticky rice balls。當然，湯圓是我們中國人的傳統(tǒng)美食，也可以直接用拼音Tang-yuan表示。
