Nowadays, when it comes to juvenile delinquency, some assume that the best solution to decrease crime rate is to teach parents parenting skills. As for me, I don’t stand up for this viewpoint. To impart parental skills is only one of the important approaches, not the best one.
In fact, there is no denying that the quality and stability of children’s relationships with their parents will lay the foundation for children’s growth across a wide range of domains, including their cognitive, emotional, social, behavioral, and physical development.? What’s more, it is reported that most young offenders have been victims themselves, experiencing high levels of abuse, neglect and violence----even from infancy. In this sense, educating parents sufficient parental strategies is of great significance. However, training parenting skills alone is not enough.
Firstly, early intervention plays an important role in keeping minors, particularly those from high-risk families and communities, from committing crimes. To be specific, a large amount of evidence proves that improving community, society and family environments is effective to keep the young away from entering into the prison. Secondly, the government should take measures to prevent young offenders from re-offending by adopting personalized methods and proper educational programs. Actually, the most beneficial way the government can do for those juvenile delinquents is to combine care, punishment, education and employment measures. Thirdly, conflict resolution and violence prevention curricula at school are also essential, which may facilitate the young to grow up in learning to deal with conflicts with others in a positive and constructive manner.
In conclusion, while educating parents with parenting skills is vital in lessening crime rate of the young, early intervention is? necessary. Besides, governments and schools have equally indispensable responsibilities.?
