?The UN just unveiled a design for a new floating city
The United Nations just unveiled a concept for a floating city that can hold around 10,000 residents.?Unlike instances in the past when these futuristic designs have been?met with scepticism, the executive director of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat), Maimunah Mohd Sharif, said the UN would support and shepherd this project to fruition.
The company believes a floating city project would address both dire housing shortages and threats from rising sea levels. The structures themselves would be designed to withstand all sorts of natural disasters, including floods, tsunamis, and Category 5 hurricanes.?The concept, known as Oceanix City, though it still needs funding, it’s essentially a toolkit for investors brave enough to take on the project.
By designing each platform as a hexagon, the builders hope to minimise their use of materials.?10,000 is the ideal number of residents, since it would allow the island to achieve “full autonomy” by producing its own power, fresh water, and heat.?The city would not contain any garbage trucks. Instead, pneumatic trash tubes would transport garbage to a sorting station, where it could be identified and repurposed.
Cages underneath the platforms could harvest scallops, kelp, or other forms of seafood. Aquaponic systems would use waste from fish to help fertilize plants, while vertical farms would generate year-round produce.?The platforms would be bolstered by?Biorock, a material created by exposing underwater minerals to an electric current.?All buildings would be constructed out of sustainable materials like timber and bamboo.
Those who can’t afford high rents in major cities or who want a living situation that’s less vulnerable natural disasters could benefit from the concept.

WeWork acquires $249 million office-services startup Managed by Q?
WeWork announced on Wednesday that it acquired Managed by Q, a platform for office tenants to hire on-demand workers for office-management tasks like cleaning or staffing reception desks.?
Managed by Q was most recently valued at $US249 million in a financing round in January.?While much of WeWork’s business is leasing office space to smaller tenants, it has been seeking to work with the kind of medium and larger companies that Managed by Q mainly serves.
WeWork, most recently valued at $US47 billion, has made several acquisitions over the past year to add support services for its customers, acquiring Teem, a meetings-management platform, in September, and Euclid, a platform that analyses physical spaces through WiFi, in February.?Managed by Q will not be rolled out at all WeWork locations and will continue to work with its other clients.

For now, the only phone that can connect to Verizon’s fifth-generation network in Minneapolis and Chicago is the $US480 Motorola Moto Z3, which requires a separate $US350 5G “Moto Mod” that attaches to the back of the Z3 smartphone to let the phone connect to Verizon’s 5G network.?Verizon is selling the Moto Z3 for a discounted $US240 and the 5G modification for a discounted $US200.
More 5G-capable smartphones are expected later this year.
