凡是英文學(xué)習(xí)者，手頭一般都會有一兩部紙質(zhì)或網(wǎng)絡(luò)詞典。比如，《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》《朗文當(dāng)代高級英語詞典》等等。但要論普及率最高的詞典，可能非“有道詞典”莫屬。不信，請看這款詞典在App Store的宣傳海報。
沒錯，您現(xiàn)在使用的正是中國最流行的詞典app，不，外語學(xué)習(xí)app。
海量詞匯，詞典權(quán)威，全新拍照翻譯，便捷的語音翻譯……最重要的是它還免費?。ㄕ垷o視它的廣告和有道全家桶）。
三年前，我做建筑口譯那會兒，認(rèn)識了幾個80后監(jiān)工（大學(xué)英語四級水平）。他們說，在我沒來之前，他們就是靠這款“神器”完成了與外國工程師的基本交流工作。
汗！我差點被有道詞典奪了飯碗。
而現(xiàn)在，我曾輔導(dǎo)的學(xué)生幾乎都在使用有道詞典App或有道翻譯官App（事實如此，不是廣告）。有個學(xué)生曾跟我說，有道詞典比某詞某霸多了。自從用了有道，做閱讀和寫作文就變得無比輕松，甚至不需要老師講解了。
我頓時便對有道沒了好感，因為它又來跟我搶飯吃了。

前幾日，我在英國《獨立報》(The Independent) 上看到這樣一條新聞：
Labour will scrap tuition fees “once and for all” if theparty wins power, the Shadow Chancellor has said.
In interviewstoday, the party refused to say whether or not that axing fees – of up to￡9,250 per year at English universities – will be in the party’s manifesto.
But footage hasemerged of a speech delivered by John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor, inwhich he let the cat out of the bag. [1]
讀罷，我發(fā)現(xiàn)“Shadow Chancellor”這個職位不會翻譯，怎么辦呢？
首先，我依次打開《新牛津英漢雙解大詞典》 (第2版) 、《朗文當(dāng)代英語辭典》(第5版) ，但卻未能找到該詞條的意思。
已是凌晨，任務(wù)還未完成，我急了。
不得已，我向“萬能的”有道詞典求助。我曾經(jīng)是那么討厭有道，如今只能認(rèn)慫。然而，讓我意想不到的是，我竟然在上面找到了我想要的“答案”。瞌睡的我瞬間滿血復(fù)活。
我告訴自己，ShadowChancellor應(yīng)該就是“影子大臣”或者“英國影子內(nèi)閣大臣”，畢竟“基于9個網(wǎng)頁”，秒懂釋義看著也很靠譜，不必糾結(jié)，還是趕稿子、睡覺要緊。
就這樣，我開始翻譯：“英國影子內(nèi)閣大臣約翰·麥克唐奈(John McDonnell) 稱，若工黨執(zhí)政，將“徹底”取消（大學(xué)）學(xué)費……” 隨后，我安心睡去。
幾天后，當(dāng)我無意中翻出《美英報刊導(dǎo)讀 (第二版) 》這本書時，我發(fā)現(xiàn)，有道詞典的解釋是錯的！
Shadow Chancellor 不能譯為“影子大臣”或“英國影子內(nèi)閣大臣”，正確的譯文應(yīng)該是“英國影子內(nèi)閣財政大臣” (Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer) 。
請看書中注解：
有的詞典將Shadow Chancellor譯為“影子內(nèi)閣大臣”。其實是“影子內(nèi)閣財政大臣”，影子內(nèi)閣大臣是“Shadow Minister / Secretary”，有文章為證……（此處省略的內(nèi)容是1991年1月12日《經(jīng)濟學(xué)人》文章原文。）
影子內(nèi)閣大臣全稱是“Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer”，這跟“foreign secretary”的全稱是“Secretary of State For Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs” [2] 一樣。當(dāng)時的影子內(nèi)閣名單上列著John Smith是影子內(nèi)閣財政大臣。
英漢詞典是從英英詞典翻譯編纂而成的。任何譯者，文字水平和背景知識畢竟局限，難免出錯，即使Homer sometimes nods（大詩人荷馬也有打盹時；智者千慮，必有一失嘛）。如自認(rèn)為具有“里程碑”意義的詞典就曾受到業(yè)內(nèi)人士多方糾錯，不當(dāng)之處也非個別。因此，讀者一定要在工作中多查英英工具書和上網(wǎng)，不能貪圖省事，迷信權(quán)威。[3]
維基百科 (Wikipedia) 也是這么說的，請看下文（尤其注意粗體字）：
The Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer in the British Parliamentary system is the member of theShadow Cabinet who is responsible for shadowing the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The title is in the gift of the Leader of the Opposition but is informal. The Shadow Chancellor has no constitutional role.
The name for the position has a mixed history. It is used to designate the lead economic spokesman for the Opposition, although some Shadow Cabinets have not used the term (the Thatcher Shadow Cabinet in the Conservative Party Campaign of 1979). The term has been used interchangeably with "economic spokesperson" by the Liberal Democrats as well as the main opposition party.
This was a source of humour for one time Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, who in 2005 played the two off against one another in Parliament, saying, "I, too, have a great deal of time for theShadow Chancellor who resides in Twickenham, Vince Cable, rather than the Shadow Chancellorfor the Conservative Party."

引文最后提到的 John McDonnell 就是那篇新聞的主角“約翰·麥克唐奈”——影子內(nèi)閣財政大臣 (Shadow Chancellor) 。
我無地自容。
這次翻譯經(jīng)歷，讓我想到了“平行文本”這個概念。意思是，如果在翻譯中遇到無法理解的詞匯或表達，一定要尋找相關(guān)的英文文本，確定其最終含義。
所以說，像我這樣盲信有道網(wǎng)絡(luò)釋義的行為并不可取?；ヂ?lián)網(wǎng)時代，還應(yīng)“貨比三家”，學(xué)會科學(xué)上網(wǎng)和查詞典。
現(xiàn)在，你還堅信，擁有有道詞典，就擁有了辭海，就擁有了整個英語世界嗎？
