An old farmer lived on a farm in the mountains with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his holybook. One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the holy book just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soonas I close the book. What good does reading the book do?"
曾經(jīng)有一位住在深山中的農(nóng)夫，他與他的孫子相依為命。外公有個習(xí)慣，就是每天都會很早起來坐在廚房讀圣經(jīng)。有天孫子問外公：“外公！我讀過你的圣經(jīng)，但是我覺得讀不懂，即使有些讀得懂，但是一合上書我就忘了。那么，讀書有什么好處呢？”
The grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied,"Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."
外公輕輕地把煤放到火爐后，轉(zhuǎn)身回答道：“你去拿著這個煤籃子到河里打一籃子水回來?！?/p>
The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before here turned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.? The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out the door to watch the boy try
again. At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house.? The boy again dipped the basket into the river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket wasagain empty. Out of breath, he said, "See?Grandpa,it's?useless!"
孫子照著他的話做了，但是他怎么也帶不回來水，因為他還沒到房子前水已經(jīng)流完了。外公笑了笑說道：“下次你再快點就行了?！?/p>
于是他又拿著籃子回去河里打水。這次他跑得更快了，但是籃子里的水還是跟前面一樣，在他到房子前就流完了。他上氣不接下氣地回到外公那，告訴外公：“用籃子裝水是不可能成功的！”然后他換了一個水桶。這時，外公說道：“我要的不是一桶水，而是一藍(lán)子水。你之所以沒有打回來是因為你跑的不夠快。這次，外公出門看著他打水回來。這時，孫子終于意識到了：用籃子打水是不可能能行的。但是他還是想讓外公知道，哪怕他跑得再快，用籃子打水在回到房子前肯定是會流完的。于是他又去打了一次，這次他跑的非?？?。但是當(dāng)他回到外公那時，籃子又空了。他上氣不接下氣對外公說：”看吧！這根本沒用的“。
"So you think it is useless?" the old man said, "Look at the basket." The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basketand was now clean, inside and out.
外公說：”那么，你認(rèn)為這么做就是沒用的？“，外公又說：”看看這個籃子”孫子看了看籃子，才意識到：籃子不一樣了！原來那個裝煤的又臟又舊的破籃子已經(jīng)從里到外煥然一新！
Son, that's what happens when you read the book. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out!!!
孩子，這就是你讀書時發(fā)生的事情。你或許沒有讀懂或者記住什么，但是當(dāng)你在讀書時，你會從里到外的改變?。?！
