Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Chapter 12~13
1. After all, it was good, ripe age; and Ralston's straight words had, in some ways, had an effect.
②have an effect 直譯為“有影響”,結(jié)合上下文可以理解為Chips聽(tīng)了Ralston的話(huà),“往心里去了”。take something to heart
2. He felt that it would not be fair to hang on if he could not decently do his job. Besides, he would not sever himself completely.
同時(shí),短語(yǔ) a decent number of 相當(dāng)于 many,表示“大量的”。
3. Staefel was thirty years his junior, but the two men got on excelently.
A is + 年紀(jì) + B‘s junior/senior, 表示“A比B大或者小多少歲”,一個(gè)非常實(shí)用的表達(dá)。
4. Once a term he dined with the Head, and once also with the masters.
5. But one didn't guess what lay ahead.
6. Armies clenched in deadlock from the sea to Switzerland.
7. I have to take classes myself, take prep for fools like that, work till midnight every night, and get cold-shouldered as a slacker on top of everything.
①take prep for sb,
③slaker n.
8. You look pretty fit, and, of course, you know all the ropes.
know the ropes 熟悉情況, 正在熟悉情況,可以說(shuō):I'm learning the ropes.
9.I don't mean a lot of hard word for you - you needn't take anything strenuously - just a few odd jobs here and there, as you choose.
1. breathlessly??['breθl?sl?]
2. There was a lot of war talk.
3.1913; sixty-five
