英語中有很多形容母愛偉大的說法，其中最浪漫也最霸道的，莫過于以下這種：

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

“rocks the cradle”，搖搖籃，象征著母親對孩子的關(guān)愛。如果一位母親能夠全身心地照顧和陪伴她的孩子，那么她將擁有世界上最偉大的力量。這種力量也許不一定能夠“rules the world”，但它一定能夠更好地呵護自己的親人。

因此，It's important that we offer mothers every support we can. After all, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.

這里，我們還要特別強調(diào)一下“rock”這個詞的用法。在句中，“rock”作動詞，表示“搖晃，搖動”。因此，“rock music”，就是我們熟知的搖滾樂。

但是，“rock”作名詞時，就沒有“搖擺”的意思了。作名詞時，“rock”一般表示“巖石”或“石頭”。

英語中，也有不少和“石頭”有關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語。

我們先來看《時代周刊》（Time）中的一句話：

He hit rock bottom in 2006, so crippled by anxiety that he could barely leave the house.

句中的“rock bottom”，指的是“the lowest possible level or absolute bottom”，即“低谷，最低點”。

因此，上面那句話的意思就是：2006年，他走到了人生的低谷，焦慮地幾乎只能呆在家里，寸步難行。

因為搭配了“bottom”這個詞，所以“rock bottom”表示“低谷”并不難理解。此外，我們一般用“hit rock bottom”表示“達到了最低點”。

當然，在“hit rock bottom”之前，我們可能會“hit the rocks”。

與“hit rock bottom”不同的是，“hit the rocks”表示“遇到困難或麻煩”，“to encounter an especially difficult, troubled point, as in a relationship or some pursuit”。它的嚴重性，比“hit rock bottom”輕一些。

我們來看一個例子：

We'd been great friends for nearly 10 years, but our friendship has hit the rocks lately.

要注意的是，在“hit the rocks”中，“rock”必須為復(fù)數(shù)形式。

不管是“hit rock bottom”，還是“hit the rocks”，如果被擊中的是頭部，那么可能帶來更嚴重的后果。

英語中也有一個與之相關(guān)的習(xí)慣用語，叫作“have rocks in one’s head”。它有點類似于我們常說的“死腦筋”或“腦子壞掉了”，也就是“to be silly or crazy”。
