Part 2
-Cooper: This is from the, uh, relay probe?
-Doyle: It was in orbit around the Wormhole. This is the Wormhole, and every time we'd come around... we would receive images from the other side of the foreign galaxy.
-Cooper: Oh, yeah. Like swinging a periscope around.
periscope /'p?r?skop/ n.
-Doyle: Exactly.
-Cooper: So we got a pretty good idea what we're gonna find on the other side, huh?
-Doyle: Navigationally.
-Brand: Guys? Looks like we'll be approaching the Wormhole in about three hours.
-Romilly: Hey, Coop? Can we stop the spinning?
-Cooper: Why?
-Romilly: Um... Because we're close enough to see it now?
-Cooper: All right.
-Romilly: Thanks. There, that's... that's it! That's the Wormhole!
-Cooper: Say it, don't spray it, Rom. It's a sphere.
sphere /sf?r/ n. 球體
-Romilly: Of course it is. What, you...? You thought it would just be a hole?
-Cooper: No, it's just that all the illustrations I've ever seen, they...
-Romilly: In the illustrations, they're trying to show you how it works. So they say you want to go from here to there. But it's too far, right?
-Cooper: Mm-hm.
-Romilly: So a Wormhole bends space like this, so you can take a shortcut through... a higher dimension. Okay, so... to show that, they've turned three-dimensional space into two dimensions... which turns a Wormhole into two dimensions, a circle. What's a circle in three dimensions?
shortcut /'??rtk?t/ n.
dimension /d?'m?n??n/ n. 維度
-Cooper: A sphere.?
球體。
-Romilly: Exactly. A spherical hole. But who put it there? Who do we have to thank?
-Cooper: I'm not thanking anybody until we get out of here in one piece, Rom. Any trick to this, Doyle?
Doyle?
-Doyle: No one knows.
-Cooper: The others made it, right?
-Doyle: At least some of them.
-Cooper: Everybody ready to say goodbye to our solar system?
-TARS: To our galaxy.
-Cooper: Here we go.
-TARS: The controls won't work here. We're passing through the bulk. It's space beyond our three dimensions. All you can do is record and observe.
bulk /b?lk/ n.
-Doyle: What is that?
-Brand: I think it's them.
-TARS: Distorting space-time.
distort /d?'st?rt/ v.
-Doyle: Don't! Don't! What was that?
-Brand: The first handshake.
-Doyle: We're... We're here.
-Doyle: So the lost communications came through.
-Brand: How?
-Doyle: The relay on this side cached them. So years of basic data. No real surprises. Miller's site has kept pinging thumbs up, as has Dr. Mann's. Um... Edmunds' went down three years ago.
cach /k??/ v. 緩存
-Brand: Transmitter failure?
-Doyle: Maybe. He was sending the thumbs up right until it went dark.
-Romilly: But Miller's still looks good though, right? Because she's coming up fast.
-Doyle: Mm-hm.
-Romilly: With one complication. The planet is much closer to Gargantua than we thought.
Gargantua /ɡɑ'ɡ?ntju?/ n.
-Cooper: Gargantua?
-Doyle: It's what we're calling them, the black hole. Miller's and Dr. Mann's planets both orbit it.
orbit /'?rb?t/ v.
-Brand: And Miller's is... is on the horizon??
horizon /h?'ra?zn/ n. 視界
-Romilly: As a basketball around a hoop. Landing there takes us dangerously close. And a black hole that big has a huge gravitational pull.
-Cooper: Look, I could swing around that neutron star to decelerate.
decelerate /di's?l?ret/ v. 減速
-Brand: No, it's not that. It's time. The gravity on that planet will slow our clock compared to Earth's drastically.
-Cooper: Well how bad?
-Romilly: Every hour we spend on that planet will be... seven years back on Earth.
-Cooper: Jesus.
-Romilly: Well, that's relativity, folks.
-Cooper: Well, we can't just drop down there without...
-Doyle: Cooper, we have a mission.
-Cooper: Yeah, Doyle, we have a mission, and our mission Plan A is... to find a planet that can habitat the people that are living on Earth right now.
habitat /?h?b?t?t/ v. 供......居住
-Doyle: You can't just think about your family. Now you have to think bigger than that, all right?
-Cooper: I am thinking about my family and millions of other families, okay? Plan A does not work if the people on Earth are dead by the time we pull it off.
-Doyle: No. It doesn't. That's why there's a Plan B.
-Brand: Okay. Cooper's right. We need to think of time as a resource, just like oxygen and food. Going down is gonna cost us.
-Doyle: All right, look. Dr. Mann's data is promising, right? But It's going to take us months to get there. And Edmunds', it's even further. Miller hasn't sent much, but what she has is very promising. It's water, it's organics...
promising /'prɑm?s??/ adj.
-Brand: You don't find that every day.
-Doyle: No, you don't. And just think about the resources, including time... that would be spent trying to get back here.
-Cooper: Romilly...
Romilly......
-Romilly: Yeah?
-Cooper: How far off from Miller's planet do we have to be to stay out of the time shift?
-Romilly: Just back from the cusp.
cusp /k?sp/ n.
-Cooper: All right, which is here, just outside of Miller's planet.
-Romilly: Right.
-Cooper: Okay. Here's Gargantua. Here's Miller's planet. Instead of taking the Endurance into orbit around Miller's planet... which would conserve fuel, but we would lose a lot of time... What if we take a wider orbit around Gargantua, we parallel with Miller's planet outside of this time shift, to here? Then we take the Ranger down, we get Miller, we get her samples. We come back. We analyze, we debrief. We're in, we're out. We lose a little fuel, but we save a whole lot of time.
conserve /k?n's?v/ v. 節(jié)約
orbit /'?rb?t/ n. 軌道
parallel /'p?r?l?l/ v. 平行
sample /'s?mpl/ n. 樣本
analyze /'?n?la?z/ v. 分析
debrief /di'brif/ v.
fuel /'fju?l/ n.
-Brand: That'll work.?
-Romilly: That's good.
-Cooper: There's not going to be time for monkey business or chit-chat down there. So, TARS, you should definitely stay here. CASE, you're with me. Anyone else can stay.
-Romilly: If we're talking about a couple years, I could use the time to research gravity. Observations from the Wormhole, that's gold to Professor Brand.
-Cooper: TARS, factor an orbit of Gargantua. Conserve fuel, minimize thrusting, but make sure we stay in range of Miller's planet. You got it?
factor /'f?kt?/ v. 擬合
-TARS: I wouldn't leave you behind... Dr. Brand.
